Culture Above and Below Ground
The Weidenberger Kellernacht is one of Upper Franconia's most unusual cultural events. The venue is the historic sandstone ensemble on the Oberer Markt in the market town of Weidenberg in the district of Bayreuth — a place where history literally opens up beneath visitors' feet.
The Historic Rock Cellars
In the early Middle Ages, the citizens of Weidenberg dug numerous cellars into the soft sandstone beneath the town centre. These Felsenkeller (rock cellars) served for storage over centuries and are today a unique archaeological monument. For the Kellernacht, selected cellars are opened and either atmospherically decorated or used as stages for artistic performances and exhibitions — which changes from year to year, making each edition unique.
Cabaret, Music, and Enjoyment
Above ground, a cultural supporting program on the Oberer Markt complements the underground experience. Cabaret, live music, and a diverse culinary offering make the Kellernacht a festival for night owls. The mix of tradition, culture, and cabaret attracts several hundred visitors to the historic town centre.
Community Festival on the Weekend
The Kellernacht on the third Friday in July traditionally kicks off the Weidenberg festival weekend: the community festival follows on the third Sunday in July, allowing for celebrations above and below ground over several days.
Weidenberg in the District of Bayreuth
The market town of Weidenberg is located east of Bayreuth in the administrative region of Upper Franconia, on the edge of the Fichtelgebirge mountains. As an awarded 'GenussOrt' (place of enjoyment), Weidenberg combines regional culinary delights with vibrant tradition — the Kellernacht is its cultural flagship.
