Traditional Kirchweih on the Bürgerplatz in the Middle Franconian town of Weidenbach
The Weidenbacher Kerwa, also simply called "die Kerwa," is one of the most important village festivals in the southern district of Ansbach. It is traditionally celebrated around the second Sunday in May and is among those Kirchweihen that definitively usher in spring in Middle Franconia. The entire village is turned upside down for four days: festival tent, festivities, church service, and dancing alternate.
The centerpiece is the Bürgerplatz, where TSV Weidenbach sets up the festival tent and handles the catering. Local bands play here, the first barrel is tapped here, and grandparents, parents, and children sit together at the long tables. The second central venue is the Triesdorf Riding Hall, one of the most beautiful margravial structures in Franconia – here, the Heimatverein Weidenbach-Triesdorf hosts the Kerwatanz every year, which traditionally forms the highlight of Saturday.
Weidenbach is a market town with just under 1,800 inhabitants in the district of Ansbach, on the edge of the Hesselberg region. The town is primarily known for the neighboring Triesdorf, the former summer residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach with its palace ensemble and the present-day agricultural academy. This combination – a historically shaped cultural landscape on one hand, and vibrant Franconian village tradition on the other – makes the Kerwa interesting for visitors from all over Franconia and beyond.
Unlike large urban folk festivals, the Weidenbacher Kerwa thrives on proximity: you know the innkeepers, the musicians, and the dancers. Brass band music, a festive church service, communal meals, and the Kerwatanz alternate. Visitors from outside the community are integrated into the network of clubs, the parish, and the citizenry – a Franconian matter of course.
For decades, the Kerwa has followed the same basic structure: festival tent opening on Thursday or Friday evening, music and festivities throughout the weekend, the Kerwatanz in the Triesdorf Riding Hall as the highlight on Saturday, and the Kerwa winding down on Sunday with a festive church service and Frühschoppen (morning pint).
The complete program for 2026 will be published shortly before the Kerwa on the TSV website and the website of the Heimatverein Weidenbach-Triesdorf. The exact daily schedule follows the Franconian standard: evening events, festive Sunday with a parade, Kerwa Monday.
TSV Weidenbach and the Heimatverein will publish the full daily program shortly before the Kerwa. The typical schedule is based on previous years:
