A Day for the Entire Wartburgkreis

The Wartburgkreis District Festival travels annually to a different municipality within the district, combining cultural diversity with regional identity. In 2026, Wünschensuhl is the host — a small district of the town of Werra-Suhl-Tal in the Wartburgkreis. On Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the village center transforms into a festival ground for the approximately 122,000 inhabitants of the district — and all guests from Thuringia, Hesse, and Bavaria. Free admission.

Star Hike as Festival Kick-off

The festival begins early in the morning — with a star hike from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hiking groups set off from several surrounding villages, all meeting in Wünschensuhl. This format is more than symbolic: it leads festival-goers on foot through the typical Werra-Suhl-Tal landscape with its wooded slopes and meadows, making the geographical center of the Wartburgkreis tangible.

Diverse Stage Program

Regional musicians and dance groups take turns on stage: the Suhltalmusikanten (traditional brass music), an Accordion Duo with folk music, the Eisenach Fanfare Corps (with historical fanfares), the "Johann Sebastian Bach" Music School from Eisenach (classical youth ensembles), dance groups from the region, a traditional costume fashion show featuring classic Wartburg and Eichsfeld costumes, and school performances from across the Wartburgkreis. In between, there are speeches, greetings, and awards — typical elements of a district festival.

Children's Festival with Bouncy Castle and Shooting Competition

There is a special program for children: bouncy castles, outdoor games, face painting, a barefoot path, and small shooting competitions (with air rifle or dart). A participation stage where children can showcase their talents is also part of the program. This ensures the festival remains attractive for families with young children.

Regional Cuisine and Encounters

Food stalls offer regional specialties: Thuringian Bratwurst, burgers, game specialties from the surrounding forests (Wartburgkreis is a hunting region), and drinks. Stalls from regional craftspeople and information booths from local associations complete the picture. In the evening, starting at 8 p.m., the "Evening of Encounters" begins with live entertainment — an open dance event for everyone who hasn't headed home yet.

Free Shuttle and Arrival

A free shuttle has been arranged for arrival: Bus line 992 runs between Marksuhl, Wünschensuhl, and Gerstungen from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — also interesting for hikers and day guests. Those arriving by car will park on the outskirts of Wünschensuhl.
