Werra-Suhl-Tal — young city, old traditions
Werra-Suhl-Tal is a city formed by a municipal merger in the Wartburgkreis (Thuringia), encompassing several historical villages along the Werra-Suhl valley. The city area lies in the transition zone between the Thuringian Forest and the Werra Basin, characterized by rolling hills, forests, and small streams. Despite its young administrative structure (merger in the 2010s), the districts maintain their old festivals — one of them being the Waldfest on the Rimbachs Ruh forest clearing.
Rimbachs Ruh — a place with atmosphere
The Rimbachs Ruh forest clearing is located slightly outside the built-up city area in the forest — a spacious meadow surrounded by old beech and oak trees. The name "Rimbachs Ruh" suggests a historical resting place (presumably named after a forester or hiker named Rimbach). Today, the clearing serves as a festival site for village and forest festivals of the surrounding districts.
A classic forest festival
The Waldfest follows the traditional format of German forest festivals: opening in the late morning with a beer tapping, hiking groups from the region arrive directly at the clearing, bratwurst and steaks from the grill, cake stands by the village women, a DJ or a small live combo in the afternoon, and a cozy end to the festival in the evening by the light of fairy lights. It is a festival that honors the connection between the village community and the natural environment — far from commercial festival operations.
The Wartburgkreis as a hiking region
Werra-Suhl-Tal is located in the Wartburgkreis, one of Thuringia's most extensive hiking regions. The Werra hiking trail passes through the town, and the Rennsteig trail is reachable by car in 30 minutes. Visitors to the Waldfest can combine the day with a hike — to the Ebersburg castle, to the Drachenschlucht gorge near Eisenach, or simply through the forests around Rimbachs Ruh.
