Lights for the Start of the Year

The Warnemünder Turmleuchten — formerly known as »Leuchtturm in Flammen« (Lighthouse in Flames) — takes place every year on the evening of January 1st. The historic Warnemünde lighthouse is the centerpiece, becoming the central projection surface for an elaborate staging. Laser and light effects, pyrotechnics, and live music combine to create a show lasting about half an hour, celebrating the start of the year on the Baltic Sea beach.

The Evening's Program

A supporting program with music and entertainment begins in the afternoon. The highlight is the evening's main show, where the lighthouse is the focus of a choreographed composition of light and sound. The Turmleuchten is considered one of the largest New Year's events in Europe and draws tens of thousands of visitors to the beach.

Local Context

Warnemünde is the traditional Baltic Sea resort of the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The white and green lighthouse, built in 1898, is one of the most famous landmarks on the German Baltic Sea coast. With the Turmleuchten, the region marks a festive start to the tourist year.

Turmleuchten — edition 2026

The 26th Warnemünder Turmleuchten took place on January 1, 2026, under the motto »Lichtblicke« (Glimmers of Hope). At 6 PM, the lighthouse shone in a show lasting around half an hour, featuring lasers, pyrotechnics, light, and live music.

For the 26th time, the Warnemünder Turmleuchten transformed the lighthouse into a projection surface on January 1, 2026. Under the motto »Lichtblicke«, a show lasting about 30 minutes, featuring lasers, light, pyrotechnics, and live music, began at 6 PM. The musical highlight was Ola van Sander with a newly arranged version of Karat's classic »Ich liebe jede Stunde«. A supporting program with music and entertainment accompanied the afternoon on the beach starting from 3 PM. For safety reasons, individual pyrotechnic elements had to be omitted due to strong winds.
