Functional Fitness Sports on the Beach
Battle the Beach is a competition in functional fitness sports that has been held in the Warnemünde Strand Arena since 2021. Directly at the foot of the lighthouse, the Baltic Sea beach transforms into a competition arena where two-person teams compete against each other in various CrossFit disciplines. The event positions itself as Northern Europe's largest functional outdoor fitness event.
Teams, Divisions, and Qualification
Athletes compete in two-person teams and are divided into several performance classes — from RX to Intermediate, Scaled, and Masters. To reach the finals, teams must first prove themselves in an online qualification. The competitions combine exercises with weights, bodyweight exercises, and gymnastics elements.

Battle the Beach is also an event for spectators: Admission is free, and the action is also broadcast live. This makes functional fitness sports accessible to a broad audience on the beach.
Local Context
Warnemünde is the Baltic Sea resort of the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Strand Arena under the lighthouse and the Teepott offers a distinctive backdrop that sets the fitness event apart from classic indoor competitions.
Battle the Beach — edition 2026
Battle the Beach 2026 will be held from August 21st to 23rd in the Warnemünde Strand Arena. After an online qualification between April and May, over 300 two-person teams from several countries will compete in the finals, spread across the RX, Intermediate, Scaled, and Masters 35+ divisions. Over the three days, competition workouts involving weights, bodyweight exercises, and gymnastics elements will be completed. Admission for spectators is free throughout the weekend, and the event will also be broadcast live.
