75th edition of the traditional Volksfest in the Oberpfälzer Wald – five days of festival hall, funfair and delicacies
The Waldmünchner Heimatfest is one of the most important Volksfests in the northern Oberpfälzer Wald. The organizer is the town of Waldmünchen in the Cham district (Upper Palatinate, Bavaria), directly on the border with the Czech Republic. Over five festival days, the Heimatfest attracts thousands of visitors each year from the border region, the Bavarian Forest, and West Bohemia. 2025 marked its 74th edition – in 2026, Waldmünchen will celebrate the 75th edition.
The festival activities are concentrated on the Jahnplatz with the Waldmünchen Festival Hall, beer tent, beer garden, and bar, as well as a classic amusement park with rides and showman stalls. Traditionally, it begins with a concert on the market square and a ceremonial procession into the festival hall, followed by the beer tapping by the mayor.
The beer garden, bar, and festival tent are open daily from Thursday to Monday, with coffee and cake also served.
The Heimatfest features Oberpfälzer specialties as well as classic Volksfest fare: pork knuckle, chicken, sausages, along with Weißbier and Pils from regional breweries, and homemade cakes from local associations. In the amusement park, showman stalls with almonds, crêpes, and cotton candy cater to the sweet cravings.
The Heimatfest is closely linked to the identity of Waldmünchen, which is also regionally known for the Trenckfestspiele – the oldest historical reenactment festival of the post-war era. While the Trenckfestspiele reenact the siege of the town by Pandur Colonel Franz Freiherr von der Trenck in 1742, the Heimatfest itself is a classic Volksfest focusing on associations, music, and conviviality. Both events shape the summer in the Bavarian-Bohemian border region and make Waldmünchen a regular travel destination in the Bavarian Forest.
For the 75th edition of the Heimatfest, the town of Waldmünchen is placing special emphasis on the festive character: opening on Thursday with a concert on the market square, procession into the festival hall, and beer tapping.
Friday focuses on the senior citizens' afternoon, with a party band playing in the tent in the evening. Saturday is dedicated first to the children ("Kinderheimatfest" in the afternoon) and from 7 p.m. to the younger audience with the "Night of the Youth / Party Night". Sunday's program starts at 7:30 a.m. with Weißwurst breakfast, followed by Frühschoppen, a colorful program on the Jahnplatz, and a convivial evening. Monday is organized as the Day of Associations, Companies, Cities, and Municipalities, and concludes with festival operations, a tractor meeting, and party music in the festival hall.
The beer garden, bar, coffee, and cake are offered daily; the amusement park with rides is open throughout all five days.
Admission to the Heimatfest and the festival hall is free. Food, drinks, and rides are paid for on-site; reservations for larger groups in the festival hall can be made through the Waldmünchen town office (Tel. +49 9972 307-0).
