Pottery Town with a Long Tradition
Waldenburg in the Zwickau district is Saxony's pottery town – a nickname that goes back centuries. As early as the 16th century, stoneware pottery was produced in Waldenburg, later developing into a significant pottery industry with its own regional style. Today, the tradition is largely reduced but kept alive – not least through the annual pottery market.
Crafts on Freiheitsplatz
The Freiheitsplatz – a charming, park-like square in the historic center of Waldenburg – becomes an open-air workshop once a year in June. Potters and ceramic artists from Saxony, all of Germany, and occasionally from Europe exhibit their work:
- Decorative ceramics: Vases, bowls, sculptures
- Functional ceramics: Pots, jugs, tableware, baking dishes
- Extraordinary craftsmanship: Raku technique, salt glazes, smoke firing
- Demonstrations: Live pottery on the wheel (depending on the exhibitor)
Culinary Supporting Program
Accompanying the ceramics, stalls offer regional specialties and selected wines. This makes the market not only a showcase for pottery but also a culinary experience.
Waldenburg Castle and Daetz Hall
Visitors to the market should make a detour to the nearby Waldenburg Castle – seat of the Schönburg princely family, now a museum with a natural history collection. The Daetz Hall with its collection of international wood sculptures is also worth seeing. Waldenburg in the West Saxony federal state is a small but surprisingly rich cultural city.
