86th Volksfest at Angerring with a grand parade — Tradition since 1939
The Volksfest Schwandorf is one of the most traditional events in the Upper Palatinate. The organizer is the City of Schwandorf, with organization handled by the Tourism Office. The festival combines Bavarian customs, club life, and beer tent culture, and has been a highlight in the summer calendar for many Schwandorf families and communities in the district of Schwandorf for generations.
The highlight of the Volksfest is traditionally the grand parade on the first Saturday: Up to 1,500 participants from clubs, traditional costume groups, brass bands, marksmen's clubs, and walking groups march through the city to the Volksfestplatz, officially opening the festival. The parade is one of the city's largest events and attracts thousands of spectators along the downtown streets.
The venue is the Volksfestplatz at Angerring in the Krondorf district, an area specifically designed for large events. The beer tent and amusement ride park are arranged so that families can visit the funfair during the day, and the beer tent with its band program forms the focus in the evening. Beer is served from regional breweries.
Over ten festival days, thematic focuses are spread out: beer tent evenings with live music (party bands, folk music, Schlager), Day of Customs and Traditional Costume Groups, Family Days with reduced ride prices, a Senior Citizens' Afternoon, and the grand beer tent closing fireworks on the last evening. Previous years' editions have shown a stable program structure that is slightly varied each year.
Schwandorf is located between Regensburg and Weiden, the capital of the Schwandorf district in the Upper Palatinate region of the state of Bavaria. The city lies on the Naab river and is the gateway to the Upper Palatinate Lake District with Steinberger See and Murner See. The Volksfest is one of the most important tourist events in the region.
The 2026 Volksfest opens its gates on Friday, June 5, and concludes on Sunday, June 14. Over ten days, the Angerring Volksfestplatz bundles the entire spectrum of a classic Upper Palatinate folk festival. The highlight is the traditional parade on the Saturday following Pentecost weekend, featuring clubs, traditional costume groups, brass bands, and marksmen from the entire Schwandorf district.
The exact band lineup per festival day will be published a few weeks before the festival begins on the festival website and via the Schwandorf Tourist Information.
