A colourful family and medieval festival in the castle courtyard of Hohenzollern Castle with sword fighting and courtly dances
The family festival Courtly and Heroic takes place annually in mid-September at Hohenzollern Castle — the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern family, one of Germany's most famous castles. The event is organised by Hohenzollern Castle itself. The programme is specifically aimed at families with children and medieval enthusiasts: historical actors demonstrate sword fighting techniques, high medieval courtly dances, costume presentations, and reenactment scenes from castle life in the courtyard.
Hohenzollern Castle sits enthroned on a mountain cone (855 m) above the Hohenzollern region — visible far beyond the Swabian Jura. The current neo-Gothic complex dates from the 19th century and is the third castle on this site (origins in the 11th century). It is privately owned by the former royal Prussian Hohenzollern family and is also one of Southern Germany's most famous tourist destinations — attracting around 350,000 visitors annually. The castle courtyard, where the festival takes place, is one of the most atmospheric settings imaginable for a medieval festival.
The programme is spread over two days and includes:
• Sword fighting demonstrations by historical combat groups
• Courtly dances by dance groups in historical costumes
• Costume presentations from the High and Late Middle Ages
• Hands-on activities for children (archery, child-friendly sword making, painting, learning round dances)
• Entertainment in the castle courtyard — show fights, musicians, jugglers
• Castle tours with a thematic focus on medieval life
Catering in the courtyard with medieval-inspired dishes.
Bisingen (Zollernalb district, AGS 08417, approx. 9,200 inhabitants) lies at the foot of the Hohenzollern mountain and castle. The Zollernalb district is one of the most scenically impressive regions in Baden-Württemberg — with the Albtrauf escarpment, the Lochen area, and several prominent castles (Hohenzollern, Lichtenstein). Hohenzollern Castle is the tourist magnet for the entire region.
On the weekend of September 19th to 20th, 2026, the courtyard of Hohenzollern Castle will transform into a medieval stage. Historical actors will present sword fighting techniques, courtly dances, and reenactment scenes — and invite families to participate, watch, and immerse themselves in the courtly Middle Ages.
The programme is specifically aimed at families with children: archery, child-friendly sword making, painting, and learning round dances alternate with show fights by adult actors. A rare opportunity to experience Hohenzollern Castle from a very special perspective — and a magical weekend date in Southern Germany's autumn calendar.
