Traditional Franconian Kirchweih in the market town of Burgwindheim on the fourth weekend of July, organized by the Kirchweihburschen and -madli
In the western Steigerwald, in the Bamberg district, Franconian Kirchweih lives on like almost nowhere else. The Burgwindheim Kirchweih — affectionately called »Winnämä Kerwa« by locals — is the market town's major summer Kärwa and one of the highlights of club life in the annual calendar.
The organizers are the association Kirchweihburschen und -madli Burgwindheim e.V. — the »Winnämer Kerwasburschen« and »Kerwasmadli«. They are responsible for setting up the maypole, the parade, the Hahnenschlag, and the entire festival tent program. The traditional costume of the Burschen and Madli, the communal »Kerwa-Tanzen« (Kirchweih dancing), and the recitation of the Kärwa sermon are trademarks of the Winnämä Kerwa.
The program traditionally spans four days. The highlight is the Festival Sunday with a church service, followed by the parade of the Kerwasburschen and -madli through the town at noon, and a grand festival evening with a live band in the evening. On Festival Monday, the traditional Hahnenschlag (a game of skill to win the »Kerwa-Hahn«) takes place before the festival concludes with a dance evening.
Burgwindheim is the administrative seat of the Ebrach administrative community and a market town with several districts. Throughout the year, Untersteinach (end of August), Mittelsteinach (end of September), Kappel (mid-October), and Kötsch (end of October) also celebrate their own Kirchweihen — a dense Franconian Kärwa year in the Steigerwald.
From July 24 to 27, 2026, Burgwindheim will celebrate its Winnämä Kerwa. The festival tent, beer stand, and dance floor will be open for four days — the Kerwasburschen and -madli will lead the parade, the Hahnenschlag, and the Kärwa sermon.
Highlights include the parade on Sunday with music bands and traditional costume wearers, and the Hahnenschlag on Monday afternoon, where the »Kerwa-Hahn« is traditionally won.
Detailed program with specific band names will be announced by the association Kirchweihburschen und -madli Burgwindheim e.V. via the Bamberg Kirchweih calendar and the Facebook page @winnaem. Previous editions featured bands like »Die Seitz-Bubn« and »Hunter«.
