Annual Schützen-Volksfest of the over 95-year-old Bürgerverein Rommerskirchen
In the left-Rhenish Rhein-Kreis Neuss district, in the heart of the Lower Rhine Börde landscape, lies the municipality of Rommerskirchen. From August 29 to September 1, 2026, the Dorf- und Festplatz (village and festival grounds) transforms into the Volks- und Heimatfest — the highlight of the annual calendar for the Bürgerverein Rommerskirchen e.V., which has organized the festival since its founding in 1927. Over 95 years of history, 26 Schützenzüge, and an unusually vibrant club structure make this Heimatfest one of the most significant Schützen-Volksfeste in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district.
The Heimatfest follows the proven four-day structure of Rhenish Schützenfeste:
The current King Couple 2025/26 are Ralf Küpper and Petra from the Schwarze Husaren Rommerskirchen Schützenzug. They lead the 2026 Heimatfest in the final weeks of their reign.
The Crown Prince Couple 2026, who will be enthroned during the Heimatfest, are Stefan and Carolin Schäben from the Gillbach-Jäger Schützenzug — a special honor, as it is the first time since thezug's founding in 2000 that the Gillbach-Jäger are providing the Crown Prince Couple.
What makes the Rommerskirchen Bürgerverein extraordinary is the sheer number of 26 Schützenzüge. Each zug is its own social unit — historically divided by themes, professions, or geographical areas (Schwarze Husaren, Gillbach-Jäger, and others). This organizational structure is typical of left-Rhenish Schützen culture and explains the deep sense of community in the municipality.
The club was founded in 1927 — what began over 90 years ago with five founding züge has now grown into an organization with 26 züge and several hundred active members. The club not only organizes the Heimatfest but also other traditional events (May activities, Carnival, St. Martin's Day celebration).
The municipality of Rommerskirchen, with its approximately 13,000 inhabitants, is located in the southern part of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district, on the border with the Rhein-Erft-Kreis district. Geographically part of the Cologne Bay with its fertile farmland — until the structural change brought by lignite mining, the region was characterized by agriculture and mining industry. Today, it is a residential community with commuters traveling to Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Neuss. The Volks- und Heimatfest is the most important event in the annual community life and shapes the identity of Rommerskirchen's residents.
The 2026 Heimatfest runs over the last weekend of August with the classic four-day program. Schützen parade with all 26 züge, festival tent with live music, carousels and amusement rides for families, open-air beer garden, and the Königsschießen (King Shooting). The highlight is the coronation of the Crown Prince Couple — this time the Gillbach-Jäger with Stefan and Carolin Schäben, who are taking on this honor for the first time in the 25-year history of their zug.
Four days of Volks- und Heimatfest, Friday to Monday, classic Schützenfest structure:
All 26 züge of the Rommerskirchen Bürgerverein participate in the Schützen parade — one of the largest Schützen parades in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Food and drinks at daily prices in the festival tent and beer garden. Amusement rides at daily prices set by the showmen. Coronation Ball on Saturday evening may require a ticket.
