Summer highlight in the North Hessian carnival stronghold
The Stadtfest Volkmarsen is the annual summer major event of the North Hessian small town in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district. While Volkmarsen is primarily known regionally for its Karneval (carnival) – after the attack on the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday parade) in 2020, which made national headlines, the Volkmarsen carnival is considered a symbol of the town's resilience – the Stadtfest is its summer counterpart: an open, accessible format that transforms the town center into a festival mile for a weekend.
The Stadtfest traditionally takes place on the last weekend of August, this year Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, 2026. The timing is deliberate: after the Hessian summer holidays, before the start of September, during the typical late summer warmth of North Hesse. It is the phase when the town is fully populated again and commuters from Kassel and the surrounding area return for weekend activities.
The venue is the historic town center of Volkmarsen with the market square, the Kugelsburg castle ruins visible in the cityscape, and the half-timbered houses along the main streets. The town, with its approximately 7,000 inhabitants, offers a compact festival area: short distances, manageable size, intimate atmosphere. Visitors to the Stadtfest can reach all stalls and stages on foot – this makes it a typical small-town format where club life and personal encounters shape the festival character.
As in many small Hessian towns, the Stadtfest is supported by local clubs. Sports clubs, fire departments, carnival clubs, heritage societies, and church groups set up their stalls, coordinate catering, and provide the musical entertainment. This structure is not just folklore: the income from the two festival days often finances significant parts of the clubs' annual budgets, making the Stadtfest an economic foundation for the local club landscape.
The program setting is classic: live music on one or more stages, regional specialties such as Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), and Krombacher beer on tap, plus games for children, amusement rides depending on the year, and an open festival atmosphere that makes the whole town feel like an extension of your living room. The exact band list for 2026 is usually published a few weeks before the festival on the website of the city of Volkmarsen – contact person: Carolin Ramus.
Volkmarsen is located in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, at the transition from the Eggegebirge mountains to the North Hessian lowlands. The town has a rich historical past – once granted town rights in 1233, later part of the Principality of Waldeck – and is one of North Hesse's charmingly unspectacular destinations. With the nearby Twiste reservoir and the Diemelsee Nature Park within reach, the town is accessible for tourism without being overcrowded. The Stadtfest is one of the few major events of the year and therefore important for the citizens' identification with their town.
The 2026 edition follows the established format of previous years. The city of Volkmarsen coordinates the festival in cooperation with local clubs, which handle catering and program elements. The venue is the town center around the market square.
Note: The detailed stage program with band names, slot times, and additional activities will be published in the weeks before the Stadtfest on volkmarsen.de. Contact person: Carolin Ramus.

Combine the Stadtfest with a visit to the Kugelsburg castle ruins above the town or a hike in the Diemelsee Nature Park. Those who know Volkmarsen in spring know the town primarily from its Karneval – the Stadtfest shows the other side of a community that, after 2020, has re-established itself with great dignity in its festival culture.
