About Viezfest

The Viezfest Trier is the homage paid every two years to Trierer Viez: a lightly fermented apple wine, which has been a regional identity drink for centuries and is an integral part of Trier's culture, recognised as intangible UNESCO World Heritage in 2017. On the Domfreihof — directly in front of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of Trier Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady — the Trierer Viezbruderschaft (Trier Viez Brotherhood) presents the drink in its various forms: from clear Viez to natural cloudy Bauernviez to Viezbowl. Limited artist mugs, live music, and hands-on activities complement the programme. Free admission.

Trierer Viez is a lightly fermented apple wine, traditionally pressed from Mosel and Eifel apple varieties, unfiltered and with a moderate alcohol content of about 5 to 7 percent. It is traditionally drunk from the Viezporz — a characteristic, broad-bellied stoneware jug. The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages and is now an integral part of Trier's culinary culture. In 2017, Trier's Viez culture was added to the national inventory of intangible UNESCO World Heritage.

The Viezfest takes place every two years and is the central public celebration of this tradition. The organiser is the Trierer Viezbruderschaft, an association of Viez producers, restaurateurs, and enthusiasts. Several producers set up their stalls on the Domfreihof and serve their products — from dry to semi-sweet varieties, as well as Viezbowl and Viezsekt (sparkling Viez). A limited artist mug is designed annually by a Trier artist and sold in a limited edition. For 2026, Roland Dahm has designed a motif of the Porta Nigra.

Viezfest — edition 2026

The Viezfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, on the Domfreihof in Trier. The Trierer Viezbruderschaft will present various Viez varieties from regional producers. Limited 2026 artist mug with Porta Nigra motif by Roland Dahm. Live music, regional specialities, tastings. Free admission. Takes place every two years.

The 2026 edition coincides with the World Heritage anniversary year. Roland Dahm's artist mug motif — the Porta Nigra — connects the Viez tradition with the World Heritage connection. Several thousand visitors from Trier, the Mosel region, Saarland, and Luxembourg are expected.
