Inclusive dance night into Walpurgis May in Freiburg's Vauban district — DJs, bar, snacks, and solidarity contribution
The Vauban district in the south of Freiburg is an internationally recognized urban development icon — built on the site of a former French barracks, planned as a car-reduced, low-energy settlement with active citizen participation. More than 5,000 people live here; social life revolves around Alfred-Döblin-Platz and the Haus 037 community center.
This is exactly where Vauban dances into May takes place — a dance night for Walpurgis Eve, organized by the volunteer team around ZOZIOLIZER and the Vauban district work. The idea: dance, celebrate, and do good at the same time.
The 2026 edition runs on Thursday, April 30, 2026, starting at 9 PM. The venue is Haus 037, 1st upper floor, at Alfred-Döblin-Platz 1 in the heart of the Vauban district. DJ Conny and DJ Mekabeka will provide the musical journey through the night, and the dance floor is open until after midnight. A small bar serves drinks, and snacks are available.
The special feature of 'Vauban dances' is its consistent inclusion:
The night from April 30 to May 1 is traditionally known as Walpurgis Night and 'Dance into May' — celebrated in many German regions with bonfires, Maypole raising, and dance festivals. In urban Freiburg, the 'Vauban dances' district festival takes over this function in a modern, inclusive way: no May bonfire, no Maypole, but DJ sets, an open dance floor, and a clear solidarity concept.
The Vauban district is located in the south of the Freiburg im Breisgau district, about 3 km from the main train station. Tram line 3 connects the district to the city center every 7.5 minutes. Alfred-Döblin-Platz is the heart of the district — market square, meeting point, festival area. Haus 037 is run by the Vauban 037 e.V. district center.
The 2026 edition runs on Thursday evening, the classic Walpurgis date. The volunteer team of ZOZIOLIZER is preparing everything at Haus 037 — bar in the foyer, dance floor on the 1st upper floor, plus the accessible external elevator for guests with limited mobility.
€5 admission for everyone, free ticket for people with disabilities. The entire proceeds go to inclusive projects in the district — from language mentoring projects to activities for seniors and refugees.
The program will be updated shortly at quartiersarbeit-vauban.de/vauban-tanzt/. Support for guests with disabilities does not need to be reported in advance — the volunteer team coordinates on-site.
€5 admission. Free for people with disabilities. Bar and snack consumption separate.
Tram line 3 from the main train station or city center to the 'Innsbrucker Straße' or 'Paula-Modersohn-Platz' stop, then a 3-minute walk. Difficult by car, as Vauban is a car-reduced district — no parking spaces directly at the building.
€5 admission. Free for people with disabilities. Proceeds 100% for inclusive district projects.
External elevator to the 1st upper floor. Support from the volunteer team available upon request.
