Festival of Identity in Freiburg's West
Haslach is one of the western districts of Freiburg im Breisgau — originally a village, it was incorporated into the city in the 20th century. Today, the district has around 19,000 inhabitants and a distinct identity — multicultural, socially diverse, with active club life. The Lokalverein Freiburg Haslach e.V. is the association of Haslach's clubs, businesses, and restaurateurs — and has been organizing the annual district festival as a central meeting format for years. It is not a mass festival, but a deliberately village-like celebration that gives the people of Haslach and their guests the opportunity to meet, talk, and eat together.
Club Stands with Culinary Diversity
The club stands are the centrepiece: sports clubs, church communities, migrant communities, educational initiatives, citizens' initiatives — all have their own stands with culinary specialities. This culinary diversity is a reflection of Haslach's population: German sausage grills next to Turkish köfte stands, Italian pasta bowls next to Kurdish soups, Black Forest cakes next to African dishes. A form of culinary encounter that shapes the district's character.
Live Music and Stage Programme
On the main stage in the district centre, live music is played on Saturday afternoon and evening — typically local bands, cover bands, singer-songwriter acts, and occasionally migrant music groups with traditional sounds. The programme does not focus on big names, but on diversity and local roots. Sunday morning offers a quieter format — Frühschoppen (morning pint), coffee stand, children's programme — until the festival concludes at 1 PM.
Children, Families, Neighbours
The district festival is explicitly family-friendly. Face painting, bouncy castles, craft activities, a children's carousel, and sometimes interactive performances make Saturday a children's highlight. Sunday morning is aimed at younger families — more relaxed, quieter, with a café atmosphere. The district festival date is an important point in Haslach's annual calendar — many families plan their weekend evening there, meet neighbours, let the children play, and eat their way through the club stands.
