Bad Tennstedt — Soleheilbad in the Thuringian Basin

With around 2,500 inhabitants, Bad Tennstedt is a small spa town in the north of the Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis district, in the fertile Thuringian Basin. The town has been known as a Soleheilbad (brine spa) since the 18th century — the local medicinal spring makes the place a spa center. The spa with brine concerts, the spa park with old trees, and the historic town center with its market square and town hall form the venues for the annual Heimat- und Brunnenfest — the most important local summer event.

Heimat- und Brunnenfest — a Double Tradition

The name reveals the dual identity: Heimatfest (Homeland Festival) as a civic identity festival with clubs, local crafts, and local history; Brunnenfest (Spring Festival) as a commemoration of the medicinal springs that owe Bad Tennstedt its spa status. The Spring Princess is the link between both traditions — she represents the town and its brine spring for one year. Her crowning during the town festival is the emotional center of the event — usually with a ceremony, musical accompaniment, and a subsequent reception.

Spa Concerts and Duck Race

During the town festival weekend, the regular spa concerts also take place in the spa park — brass or folk music performances in the open air, which are part of the town's spa program. On Children's Day (typically Saturday), a duck race is held: plastic ducks float down a small watercourse — fun for the youngest and families. Local bands and artists from the region play on the festival stage. The town's clubs (shooting club, fire department, sports club, heritage society, spa music) jointly shape the program.

The Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis district in northern Thuringia, with the Hainich National Park (UNESCO World Heritage 'Ancient Beech Forests') and the district town of Mühlhausen, is one of the most scenically and historically rich districts in Thuringia. Bad Tennstedt is located in the north of the district, in the Thuringian Basin — the breadbasket of Thuringia. Visitors to the region often combine the town festival with a hike in the Hainich or a visit to the historic old town of Mühlhausen.
