Traditional Autumn Kirmes at the Community Sports Centre on the Saalebogen
The Unterwellenborn Kirmes traces its roots back to the old Kirchweih (church consecration festival) tradition and is today one of the municipality's most important Volksfeste (public festivals) on the Saalebogen. As October arrives and the trees turn yellow and red, the community sports centre becomes the festival grounds: carousels and rides are set up, a festival tent is erected, and Thuringian Bratwurst sizzles at the snack stands. The Kirmes has grown across generations and is now organised by the municipality together with local clubs.
The programme follows the classic Kirmes schedule: Friday evening opening with a dance night, Saturday the main festival day with live music and disco until late, Sunday a family-friendly day with a morning pint (Frühschoppen) and children's programme. The festival tent in the community sports centre can accommodate several hundred guests, while carousels and shooting galleries spin outside on the festival grounds. Local clubs provide catering — draft beer, mulled wine against the October chill, Bratwurst, and Thuringian dumplings.
Unterwellenborn is located in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in the state of Thuringia, on the Saalebogen between Saalfeld and Rudolstadt. The municipality is known for its steel industry — the Maxhütte steelworks Unterwellenborn has been an important industrial site since the 19th century and continues to shape the region today. Despite its industrial character, the surrounding area is scenically attractive: the Saale valley, Buntsandstein cliffs, the nearby Hohenwarte reservoir, and the Saalfeld Fairy Grottos make the region a popular excursion destination. The Kirmes is the most important community-building festival of the year.
The Unterwellenborn Kirmes is part of a dense autumn calendar in the region: just one week later (October 9–11), the Kirmes at the Könitz sports field takes place, followed by the Röblitz Rock Night in November. Those spending several days in the region can easily combine several of these village-traditional festivals.
From October 16 to 18, 2026, the Unterwellenborn community sports centre will be transformed into a festival ground. Carousels, rides, a festival tent with live music, and catering by local clubs characterise the traditional autumn Kirmes on the Saalebogen.
