Ceremony on the 30th Anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Recognition of the Luther Memorials
On December 7, 1996, the Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg were inscribed as a serial site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The inscription encompasses six sites: in Lutherstadt Eisleben, Luther's birth house and his death house; in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the Luther House, the Melanchthon House, the Castle Church, and St. Mary's Church. UNESCO thus recognized the unique importance of these places for the Reformation – an event that fundamentally changed the religious, political, and cultural landscape of Europe.
This jubilee will be celebrated in 2026. As the board of the Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt explains, the actual 25th anniversary in 2021 could not be properly celebrated due to the pandemic – now, the 30th anniversary is intended to be an even grander celebration. The jubilee year will officially open on June 20, 2026, at Luther's death house in Eisleben.
The foundation's board concisely states its aim: to show what Eisleben has in common with the Egyptian pyramids and Wittenberg with India's Taj Mahal. This is not just about a local anniversary, but a global context: the Luther Memorials belong in the same league as the most famous cultural assets of humanity. The festival program in Eisleben aims to make this message visible – with exhibitions, ceremonial speeches, music, public events, and connections to other UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The UNESCO World Heritage Day on June 7, 2026, marks the nationwide launch; the central Eisleben event follows on June 20. Further dates in Wittenberg and Eisleben are spread throughout the jubilee year. Those who want to explore the state of Saxony-Anhalt with its rich Reformation heritage will find a particularly intensive occasion in 2026. Eisleben – Luther's birthplace and deathplace, located in the Mansfeld-Südharz district – will be dedicated to its famous citizen all year round.
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, the UNESCO World Heritage jubilee will be officially opened in Eisleben. The central ceremony will be held at Luther's death house, accompanied by concerts, city tours, exhibitions, and a public festival in the Lutherstadt. This follows the nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day on June 7.
Further dates in Lutherstadt Wittenberg are spread throughout 2026. Details at luthermuseen.de.
