Klockow — Village Church in the Northern Uckermark
Klockow is part of the municipality of Schönfeld in the Uckermark district, located in northern Brandenburg, not far from the borders with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Poland. The village church of Klockow is one of the many small brick churches in the Uckermark — simple, old, and acoustically excellent. In August, it becomes a concert venue for the Uckermark Music Weeks. The festival deliberately uses the decentralised village churches of the region, often open only on Sundays, to bring early music to where it originally sounded: in the rural silence.
The Uckermark Music Weeks — Early Music in the Province
The Uckermark Music Weeks is a renowned festival for early music and musical bridges to "distant lands", as the festival management puts it. The 2026 festival runs from 1 to 23 August and comprises over twenty concerts at various venues in the Uckermark — churches, manor houses, monasteries, and castles. Special ensembles from all over Germany and Europe are invited, cultivating the repertoire of Bach-Handel-Telemann as well as lesser-known works. The festival is known regionally for its programmatic depth and unusual venues.
The Concert „Barock vs. Neobarock"
The concert on 22 August in Klockow brings the Prussian Chamber Orchestra under the Japanese conductor Aiko Ogata to the village church. The programme „Barock vs. Neobarock" contrasts original compositions from the 17th and 18th centuries with neo-baroque works from the 20th and 21st centuries — the direct sonic confrontation shows what modernity has made of the Baroque, and what the Baroque can still say today. Thomas Paffrath will moderate, explaining the selection of works and their conceptual connection. A sophisticated concert, rewarding the listener multiple times over in the concentrated atmosphere of a small village church.
Getting There — Day Trip to the Uckermark
Klockow is accessible by car via the A 11 / B 198 in about 1 hour 45 minutes from Berlin. Schönfeld is not directly served by train — the most convenient option is the RE 3 to Prenzlau, followed by a bus or rental car. Those wishing to combine the concert with a weekend in the Uckermark have plenty of connecting programmes: Templin, Lychen, Boitzenburger Land, Brodowin Organic Village, Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve. A perfect summer excursion for Berlin classical music lovers. Tickets via Reservix, preferably booked in advance — the village church only has a few seats.
