Three-day city festival one week after Pentecost
Triptis is a small town in the southern Saale-Orla district in eastern Thuringia, located at the transition from the Thuringian Slate Mountains to the Vogtland. The town has about 3,500 inhabitants and is historically characterized by the porcelain industry (largely disappeared today) and its location on the A9 motorway. The annual city festival is the most important communal event and brings the entire town and numerous guests from the region together.
A special feature of the Triptis City Festival is its timing: traditionally one week after Pentecost — thus at the end of May or beginning of June. This tradition makes the festival one of the first major summer festivals of the year in eastern Thuringia and distinguishes it from the many city festivals that take place in July or September. The festival meadow at the Schützenhaus, a traditional festival site on the outskirts of town, offers ample space for the festival tent, amusement rides, and food stalls.
The city festival follows the proven structure of German medium-sized town festivals: Opening on Friday, main program on Saturday, family day on Sunday. At the tapping of the beer keg on Friday at 4:00 PM, free beer is traditionally served — a popular start that draws the people of Triptis to the festival grounds. In the evening, there is dancing in the festival tent, and on Saturday, the main program with bands starts at 11:00 AM and continues into the night. On Sundays, the day begins at 9:30 AM with Frühschoppen and brass music — a traditional component of Thuringian-East German festival culture.
The 46th edition was celebrated in 2024 — the festival has established itself as a fixture in Triptis since the late 1970s. It survived the political upheavals of reunification, continued to exist even after the closure of the local porcelain factory, and is today a central element of the small town's identity. The organizer is the town of Triptis with numerous volunteer associations.
Triptis is located in the Saale-Orla district, a region that is rather underdeveloped in terms of tourism but attractive in terms of landscape, situated between Saalfeld, Jena, and the Bavarian border. It is known for Burgk Castle, the Bleiloch Dam, and the Saale Heights hiking trails. Visitors to the city festival can combine their stay with excursions into this rural region.
As every year, the Triptis City Festival transforms the festival meadow at the Schützenhaus into a three-day festival mile. Opening on Friday afternoon, main program on Saturday, family day on Sunday.
