One of Southeast Bavaria's largest folk festivals — over 200,000 visitors
The traditional Volksfest Mühldorf was founded in 1865, celebrating its 161st edition in 2026. It is considered one of the most important folk festivals in Southeast Bavaria (Inn-Salzach, Rosenheim, Altötting, Berchtesgadener Land) in terms of visitor numbers and economic impact. The town of Mühldorf is the district capital of the district of the same name and is strategically located between Rosenheim, Burghausen, and Salzburg.
The Volksfest features three large Bavarian beer tents with daily festivities, live music, and catering. In addition, there is the Wein-Stadl for wine enthusiasts and the Stadl Tirol with Schlager and Tyrolean music — a nod to Mühldorf's connection to nearby Tyrol via historic salt trade routes.
One of the visual highlights is the traditional costume and marksmen's parade that winds through the town during the opening. Associations, marksmen, traditional costume groups, and dignitaries from the entire Mühldorf district participate.
The event concludes with a musical and pyrotechnic fireworks display on the last day of the festival. The spectacle is oriented south, towards the Inn River, and is among the most ambitious pyrotechnic displays in Lower Bavaria.
As Mühldorf is the central town of a sprawling district, the Volksfest also serves as a meeting point for all communities in the Mühldorf district. Anyone wanting to experience an authentic Bavarian folk festival that isn't on the scale of Munich's Oktoberfest but still offers all the classic elements (beer tent atmosphere, amusement rides, traditional costumes, fireworks) will find an ideal format here.
The official festival website traditionsvolksfest-muehldorf.de confirms the dates August 28 to September 7, 2026. Mühldorf am Inn has hosted its Volksfest since 1865 — 2026 marks the 161st edition. The event "unites all social classes and age groups" and is considered "one of the largest folk festivals in Southeast Bavaria."
On the festival grounds, three large beer tents offer daily catering and live music. The Wein-Stadl complements the beer selection with wines, and the Stadl Tirol adds an alpine touch to the Lower Bavarian district capital with Tyrolean and Schlager acts.
