Alternative Christmas Market and Cultural Festival on Theresienwiese
Since 1991, the Tollwood Festival in Munich has stood for the combination of culture, enjoyment, and social commitment. The Winter Festival has been held on Theresienwiese since 2000 – where the Oktoberfest is celebrated in autumn, a colorful tent landscape with theaters, stages, markets, and gastronomic establishments emerges during Advent. The festival sees itself as a counter-design to commercial Christmas hype and advocates for peace, democracy, environmental protection, and social justice.
The heart of the Winter Festival is the "Market of Ideas." Here, artisans offer handmade products, jewelry, ceramics, and fair-trade fashion. The gastronomy is fully certified organic and internationally oriented: from Indian curry to couscous to African specialties, mulled wine, and bratwurst. The market invites you to alternative Christmas shopping in a special atmosphere.
The program includes theater, concerts, performances, circus arts in the Grand Chapiteau, and environmental initiatives. A dedicated children's tent offers daily craft and hands-on activities. The vast majority of events are accessible free of charge; tickets are sold for selected concerts and theater performances.
The crowning finale is the Tollwood New Year's Eve Party on December 31st with DJs, live music on several stages, and the traditional midnight waltz.
The Tollwood Winter Festival is a fixture in the cultural calendar of Bavaria's state capital, Munich, and is one of the largest alternative cultural events in Bavaria. Its central location on Theresienwiese makes it one of the city's best-known winter meeting points.
From November 24 to December 23, 2026, Munich's Theresienwiese will once again transform into the Tollwood Winter Festival. At the "Market of Ideas," artisans will present handmade products, fair-trade fashion, and jewelry; the international gastronomy is fully certified organic.
The cultural program includes theater, concerts, performances, and circus arts in the Grand Chapiteau, as well as a daily children's program with craft activities. More than ninety percent of the events are accessible free of charge. The festival concludes with the Tollwood New Year's Eve Party on December 31, 2026, featuring DJs, live music, and the midnight waltz on Theresienwiese.
Theresienwiese is easily accessible by subway (U4/U5 Theresienwiese, U3/U6 Goetheplatz or Poccistraße) and numerous bus lines. Travel by public transport is recommended as parking is limited.
