The "Little Oktoberfest" on Theresienwiese – the season's opening Volksfest
The Munich Spring Festival is considered the "little Wiesn" (Oktoberfest) of the state capital Munich. Since 1965, Theresienwiese – the venue for the world-famous Oktoberfest – has transformed into a Volksfest landscape every spring with festival tents, rides, and stalls. While the Oktoberfest is limited to 16 days in September, the Spring Festival offers a more relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
The festival has two main tents with different characters: The Festhalle Bayernland serves Augustiner beer from wooden barrels and offers traditional brass music – the classic Bavarian festival tent experience. The Hippodrom is a historic tent that once stood on the Wiesn and today appeals to a younger audience on Theresienwiese with Spaten beer and a modern music program. Liter prices 2026: €13.50 (Augustiner) and €14.50 (Spaten) – stable compared to the previous year.
For its 60th anniversary in 2026, the festival will extend to three weeks for the first time (April 17 to May 10). Popular attractions are returning: the "Skyfall" free-fall tower and a log flume – the latter returning to the Spring Festival for the first time in over 20 years. A historical exhibition on 60 years of the Spring Festival and the development of the Munich Volksfest will complement the program. Three new food truck concepts will expand the culinary diversity.
Bavaria's largest flea market (around 2,500 stalls on April 18), two fireworks displays (April 24 "Grand Diamond Fireworks" and May 8 "Music Fireworks" with Charivari 95.5, each at 10 PM), the Night Glow on April 29 with five hot air balloons, the classic car meeting on April 26, and the new "HandwerksFrühling" (Craft Spring) event on May 10 to conclude the festival are among the highlights. Family Days on Tuesdays offer discounted prices from 12 PM to 7 PM.
Theresienwiese, at almost 42 hectares one of Europe's largest festival grounds, is located between the districts of Ludwigsvorstadt and Schwanthalerhöhe in Munich's city center. The state of Bavaria and the state capital Munich celebrate a shorter, more intimate form of Volksfest with the Spring Festival – the opening show for the Bavarian festival season.
From April 17 to May 10, 2026, Theresienwiese in Munich will transform into the anniversary Spring Festival: 60 years after its premiere in 1965, the festival will run for three weeks instead of two for the first time. It opens on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 2:30 PM with a parade and a ceremonial first tapping.
Two festival tents form the core: the Festhalle Bayernland with Augustiner beer from wooden barrels and traditional brass music, and the younger Hippodrom with Spaten beer and a modern music program. Liter prices remain stable at €13.50 (Augustiner) and €14.50 (Spaten). For the anniversary edition, the Skyfall free-fall tower and a log flume will return to Theresienwiese, complemented by a historical exhibition on 60 years of festival history and three new food truck concepts.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Liter of beer €13.50 (Augustiner) or €14.50 (Spaten). Roast chicken, sausage specialties, and sweets at usual Volksfest prices. Rides according to showmen, discounted on Family Tuesdays.
Subway U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese (directly at the festival grounds), U3/U6 to Goetheplatz, S-Bahn (all lines) to Hauptbahnhof. Severely restricted by car – parking spaces are scarce, P+R recommended.
Admission to the festival grounds and the tents is free. Beer in the tent: Liter of Augustiner €13.50, Liter of Spaten €14.50. Rides and showmen at their respective prices. Table reservations for the festival tents directly with the landlords.
Family Days Tuesdays from 12 PM to 7 PM with discounted ride prices. If you're looking for the flea market, come early on April 18 – over 2,500 stalls make it Bavaria's largest. The fireworks displays (April 24 and May 8, each at 10 PM) and the Night Glow (April 29 with 5 hot air balloons) are the visual highlights.
