Spring wine festival in Kallstadt with opening of wine cellars and wineries — tasting weekend with wine pass through the top vineyard Kallstadter Saumagen
Those who love wine know the glass, sometimes the bottle, often the vintner — but rarely the inside of the cellar where the magic of vinification happens. The Tag der offenen Weinkeller Kallstadt offers exactly this behind-the-scenes glimpse. On a March weekend, the Palatinate wine-growing village community transforms into a walk-in wine manufactory: steel tanks, wooden barrels, fermentation vats, filter systems, bottling lines — everything becomes visible, everything is explained.
The centerpiece is the wine pass for 20 Euros. With it, visitors can taste wines at all participating Kallstadt wineries and receive personal advice from the vintners. Movement between the establishments is on foot through the manageable village of Kallstadt — no long travel distances, no bus logistics, just the Palatinate village and its wine culture.
One of the most famous vineyards in the Palatinate bears a particularly Palatinate name: Kallstadter Saumagen. The vineyard on the south-facing slope above the village produces mineralic Rieslings of considerable quality, which appear in wine books and sommelier training worldwide. During the Tag der offenen Weinkeller, visitors can taste Saumagen Rieslings from several producers side-by-side — a comparison that impressively demonstrates the stylistic breadth of a single vineyard.
Several providers offer accompanying hikes through the Kallstadt vineyards — appointments can be arranged with Weingut Müller-Ruprecht (Tel. 0160 901 595 83) or Winzergenossenschaft Kallstadt (06322 979797). The offer is complemented by the exhibition "Wein und Stein" (Wine and Stone) on the fundamentals of local viticulture at the new information boards at Saumagenplatz.
The 2026 edition offers two days of full operation with uniform opening hours from 12 PM to 6 PM at all participating wineries. With the 20 Euro wine pass, visitors can wander through Kallstadt from winery to winery, taste wines, and have the vintners explain the differences between the vineyards.
Accompanying vineyard tours will be offered — appointments can be arranged with Weingut Müller-Ruprecht or Winzergenossenschaft Kallstadt. At Saumagenplatz, new information boards on the theme of "Wein und Stein" (Wine and Stone) will inform about the geological and oenological fundamentals of Kallstadt viticulture.
