“The hardest night of the year” — Hardstyle and Hardcore in the Westfalenhallen
Since 2006, the SYNDICATE Festival has been one of the largest festivals for hard electronic music in Europe. On October 3, 2026 (German Unity Day), it will once again transform the Westfalenhallen Dortmund into “The hardest night of the year” — a ten-hour concentrated event from 6 PM to 4 AM, designed for up to 20,000 visitors.
The Westfalenhallen will be divided into four floors, each with its own style of hardness:
A total of over 40 acts will perform on the four floors — international headliners of the Hardstyle scene from the Netherlands (the motherland of Hardstyle), Belgium, Germany, and Italy. The complete lineup will be announced in the spring via the official festival website and scene magazines (DJ Mag DE).
Hardstyle and its sub-genres (Hardcore, Uptempo, Frenchcore) originated in the Netherlands and Belgium in the 1990s as a reaction to the commercialization of mainstream techno. Today, the genre is its own subculture with festivals like Defqon.1 (NL, 100,000 visitors), Decibel Outdoor (NL), and SYNDICATE — as Germany's top address with Westfalenhallen scale.
Together with MAYDAY (Techno, April/May), SYNDICATE forms the two indoor pillars of Dortmund's electronic music scene. Both use the Westfalenhallen as a stage and attract 20,000 visitors each from all over Europe. While MAYDAY caters to classic techno, SYNDICATE is designed for the hardest spectrum of the genre.
Those who come to SYNDICATE are usually part of their own subculture — with their own dress code (sportswear, often tracksuits from Hardstyle labels), their own dance styles (“Hakkuh”, “Jump-Style”), and their own musical loyalty. The festival explicitly positions itself as an “ambassador in harder styles” and sees itself as a family reunion.
The Westfalenhallen Dortmund (independent city in North Rhine-Westphalia) have been one of Germany's most important indoor concert and festival locations for decades. With their iconic dome architecture, the main arena with 14,000 seats, and several side halls, they are ideal for multi-floor festivals like SYNDICATE and MAYDAY.
SYNDICATE 2026 runs on German Unity Day as a 10-hour marathon. Four floors with their own styles of hardness, plus a pre-event area in the foyer and after-show atmosphere in the Westfalenhallen.
Mainstage — Classic Hardstyle, international headliners
Hardstyle Floor — Sub-genres Hardstyle, Euphoric, Raw
Uptempo — Faster BPMs, harder
Early Hardcore — The old school of the genre
