Streetfood festival in front of the German Mining Museum — Ascension Day weekend
The German Mining Museum Bochum is one of Germany's most renowned industrial heritage museums — with its striking winding tower, a landmark that shapes the Bochum skyline. From May 14th to 17th, 2026, the forecourt of this iconic museum will become the stage for the Streetfood Picknick Bochum. Four days of street food with hand-picked food trucks, DJ music, and a unique industrial-cultural atmosphere — one of the best street food festivals in the early summer Ruhr area.
The festival takes advantage of the extended Ascension Day weekend (Ascension Day, May 14th, 2026, falls on May 14th in 2026) — the ideal time for an extended street food experience. Thursday, with 10 opening hours (12 PM–10 PM), is the longest festival day, perfect for Ascension Day brunch, lunch, and evening entertainment. Friday opens only at 5 PM (after-work vibe), while Saturday and Sunday have full-day opening hours again.
Organizer Finest Event Catering carefully selects the food trucks for its festivals — quality over quantity is the principle. Trucks are expected to offer international cuisine: American BBQ, Asian wok dishes, Mediterranean specialties, vegan and vegetarian options, as well as sweet treats (crêpes, donuts, ice cream) for an afternoon snack. All food trucks prepare dishes fresh on-site — no pre-cooked catering, but a genuine street food atmosphere.
The culinary offerings are accompanied by a DJ set that provides a rhythmic backdrop to the festival without being overpowering. Unlike loud open-air concerts, the music is deliberately relaxed — sundowner beats, house ambient, easy listening. Seating, standing tables, and picnic blankets in the shade of the old trees on the museum's forecourt make the festival a relaxed summer experience.
The German Mining Museum Bochum (DBM) is the world's largest mining museum and the only research museum for mining and industrial history in Germany. Its winding tower, 71 meters high, is one of Bochum's most distinctive landmarks — it originates from the former Germania colliery in Dortmund and was relocated to Bochum in 1973. The show mine beneath the museum, with 2.5 km of tunnels, is a visitor highlight. During the Streetfood Picknick, the museum is open as usual — an ideal combination of industrial culture and street food enjoyment.
With around 365,000 inhabitants, Bochum is one of the most important cities in the Ruhr area. Known for the Ruhr University, the Bochum Theatre, Starlight Express, and the Mining Museum, the city combines industrial history with a vibrant creative scene. The Streetfood Picknick adds a new format to Bochum's event profile, positioning the city as a foodie destination.
