International Street Food and Creative Market Weekend in front of Magdeburg Cathedral
The Domplatz in Magdeburg is one of the most impressive cathedral squares in Germany. Here stands the Gothic cathedral, here the axis of the Breiter Weg ends, here begins the Hundertwasserhaus 'Grüne Zitadelle'. With over 13,000 square meters, the square is also one of the largest open event spaces in the city center of the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. This is precisely why many major city events take place here — and for several years now, the street food weekend.
The organizer is Alex Veranstaltungen GmbH from Magdeburg, which carries out the format under the umbrella name 'Streetfood on Tour' in several locations in Saxony-Anhalt. On the Domplatz, it combines the street food component with a creative market: designers, jewelers, and craftspeople set up next to food trucks, and a small stage provides live music, while a children's area ensures family-friendliness.
The culinary focus is deliberately international: Korean bao, pulled pork, falafel, Asian curries, Italian pasta, Swedish köttbullar, plus sweet stalls with crêpes, donuts, and waffles. Vegan and vegetarian options are standard. In addition, the format curates a creative market with handmade items — jewelry, ceramics, textiles, prints — predominantly from Saxony-Anhalt and neighboring federal states.
What distinguishes the market from many street food festivals: no admission fee, plus a children's program with crafts and games. This makes the weekend a relaxed family outing, often combined with a walk to the Elbe or a visit to the cathedral. Around 7,000 visitors attend each edition.
The spring edition traditionally marks the start of the open-air market season in Magdeburg. Around 30 to 40 exhibitors set up their stalls, two-thirds in the food sector and one-third in the creative sector. The stage offers free live music from regional bands and DJ sets.
