Medieval Spectacle around Magdeburg Cathedral
When flags flutter at Magdeburg Cathedral in October and the smell of campfires drifts across the Cathedral Square, one of the largest medieval festivals in Saxony-Anhalt begins. The Kaiser-Otto-Fest commemorates the fact that the state capital was once one of the most important imperial palace locations in Europe. It was here that Otto I, the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, was crowned – and it is precisely here, between the Cathedral, Kloster Möllenvogtei, and Fürstenwall, that the heart of the festival beats.
You move through an extensive area that connects several historical sites in Magdeburg's city center. Knight camps with real horses, craftsmen forging iron or sewing leather pouches, show fights with swords and lances, jugglers, minnesingers, and fire-eaters – the program condenses around a thousand years of city history into a multi-day spectacle. Historical figures, from the city founder Otto to Otto von Guericke and the cathedral canons of the 18th century, parade in costume through the streets.
Unlike classic medieval markets, the organizers of the state capital Magdeburg focus on a curated mix of education and entertainment. Theater ensembles perform on several stages, bands play medieval and folk music, and the culinary selection ranges from mead and honey wine to suckling pig, stick bread, and soups from copper kettles. For families, there is archery, hands-on workshops, and small performances that also engage younger visitors.
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg, a city without a district and the administrative seat, plays a special role: here, proximity to UNESCO World Heritage sites (Quedlinburg, Naumburg) and the history of the early Middle Ages combine in a confined space. The Kaiser-Otto-Fest is therefore more than a folk festival – it is an annual affirmation of where this city comes from. Thousands of visitors from the region, as well as from Berlin, Hanover, and Leipzig, travel every year to immerse themselves in the Middle Ages.
The 16th iteration of the Kaiser-Otto-Fest from October 2 to 5, 2026, seamlessly continues the success of the previous year's event. Four days over the extended weekend around German Unity Day will make Magdeburg's Cathedral Square the largest medieval stage in Saxony-Anhalt. The exact program will be gradually released throughout the summer of 2026 on the official website kaiserottofest.de – as experience shows, ensembles and artists change from year to year, but the dramatic framework of the opening ceremony, parades, tournaments, and fire show remains consistent.
The complete 2026 program is expected to be published from August 2026 onwards on kaiserottofest.de and on social media channels. You can expect the following recurring program elements that have characterized the festival for years:
Note: The artists will be presented individually in the weeks leading up to the festival. No speculative name-dropping before official announcement by the organizers.
