Europe's largest street music festival in the city centre of Würzburg
Since its premiere in 2003, STRAMU (Street Music Festival) has grown into a major event on the European festival calendar. Every year, it transforms Würzburg into an open concert city on the second weekend of September: over 70 acts from around 20 nations, 20 performance venues in the city centre, approx. 80,000 visitors, free admission. This makes STRAMU one of the largest street music festivals in Europe.
The performance venues are strategically spread across the historic old town: from the Oberer Markt with the main stages, through the Marktplatz and Domstraße, down to the Alte Mainbrücke and Rathausplatz. Visitors stroll between the stages, discover new acts, stay longer, move on – a festival without entrance checks, without wristband requirements, with the entire city centre as the festival grounds.
The musical and artistic spectrum ranges from solo singer-songwriters and acoustic folk acts to brass bands and funk combos, as well as beatboxers, a cappella groups, and performance artists. In addition, there is acrobatics, street art performances, comedy, and magic. A curatorial panel selects from several hundred international applications each year – the application deadline is usually January 15th.
At the end of each edition, three awards are presented: Best Music Act, Best Non-Music Act, and Best Würzburg Newcomer. In 2025, these were Ben Morgan (Music), ManoAmano (Performance), and the RG6 project (Würzburg Newcomer).
With its Residence (UNESCO World Heritage site), Cathedral, and Fortress Marienberg, Würzburg is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Southern Germany. STRAMU makes maximum use of this architectural backdrop: concerts in front of the Falkenhaus, brass bands on the Alte Mainbrücke with the fortress as a backdrop, acoustic sets in the courtyards. This combination of a European festival format and Baroque city scenery has made STRAMU one of the defining Würzburg events alongside the Mozartfest, Hafensommer, and Africa Festival.
The 2026 edition continues the established 3-day format. As usual, the application deadline for artist selection for 2026 was January 15th; the curatorial panel has compiled the final artist list from several hundred international applications. The exact schedule of venues and acts will be published by the organiser in the weeks leading up to the festival at stramu-wuerzburg.de.
Following the edition, the three STRAMU awards are traditionally presented: Best Music Act, Best Non-Music Act, and Best Würzburg Newcomer.
Würzburg is on the ICE route Frankfurt–Nuremberg and is a hub for the A3 and A7 motorways. It's about a 10-minute walk from the main train station to the city centre. During the festival, parts of the city centre are traffic-calmed – travel by public transport or Park & Ride is recommended.
Admission to all stages and venues is completely free. Artists' hats at the edge of the stage for voluntary donations ("Hutgeld" – hat money) are welcome.
Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoon/evening. Stage plan and setlists for individual stages can be found at stramu-wuerzburg.de.
