Traditional town Kirchweih in Stein near Nuremberg with festival tent and fireworks
The Steiner Kirchweih is one of Middle Franconia's characteristic Volksfeste and takes place annually on the last weekend of August in the town of Stein. Stein is located in the district of Fürth, directly on the southwestern city limits of Nuremberg, and is known regionally as the home of the Faber-Castell headquarters. The town traditionally holds its major Kirchweih on the festival grounds at Kristall Palm Beach.
The festive opening is marked by the tapping of the first keg by the Mayor – accompanied by representatives from politics, business, and society. The festival tent celebrates with live music, Franconian specialties, and a diverse range of drinks and food. The annual highlight is the grand parade through the main street: numerous members of local clubs and associations march with imaginative Kirchweih floats, music bands, and traditional costumes through the town, lined by thousands of spectators.
Stein's Kirchweihs are a multi-faceted phenomenon: In addition to the main Kirchweih in the town center, the districts also celebrate their own Kärwa (local Kirchweih): Bertelsdorf and Eckershof on the last weekend of June, Ober- and Unterweihersbuch, Gutzberg, Loch, and Unterbüchlein at the beginning of July, Deutenbach in September. This club structure shapes the town's image and makes the Kirchweih season a series of Franconian festivals lasting several months.
With its combination of tradition, club life, and a large festival tent, the Steiner Kirchweih embodies Franconian Kärwa customs in their civic form. The Middle Franconian district of Fürth, shaped by its proximity to the metropolis of Nuremberg and a dense network of festival clubs, is considered one of the centers of Franconian Kirchweih culture – the Stein edition is one of its showpieces.
From Friday, August 28 to Monday, August 31, 2026, the town of Stein invites you to the traditional Steiner Kirchweih on the festival grounds at Kristall Palm Beach. The four-day Volksfest follows the established schedule: keg tapping on Friday evening, festival operations in the large tent, parade through the main street on Sunday, and closing fireworks on Monday evening.
Concurrently, the districts will celebrate their own Kärwa: Bertelsdorf and Eckershof on the weekend of June 27-28, 2026, Ober- and Unterweihersbuch, Gutzberg, Loch, and Unterbüchlein from July 3 to 6, 2026. The main Kirchweih in the town center marks the highlight of the entire Steiner Kirchweih season.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food and drinks in the festival tent are at usual Volksfest prices. Amusement rides have their own tariffs set by the operators.
Stein is located directly southwest of Nuremberg and is easily accessible by subway (U3 to Gustav-Adolf-Straße) and bus lines from the metropolitan region. By car, take the A73 (exit Nürnberg-Hafen/Stein) or the B14. Parking is available near the festival grounds but is limited.
Admission to the Kirchweih is free. Costs for food and drinks in the festival tent are at the usual Volksfest level.
Those who want to experience the parade from the best spots should arrive early on Sunday on the main street. The fireworks on Monday evening are worth extending your stay for. A visit to the Kirchweih can be ideally combined with a city trip to Nuremberg.
