Medieval Market on the Castle Island — Summer 2026, date to be announced
The Medieval Castle Festival Fürstenau utilizes the unique setting of the castle island with Schloss Fürstenau — one of Northern Germany's most important moated castles. The historical substance, the moats, and the ramparts provide an atmospheric stage for a medieval festival that is rarely found in this form.
The 2026 edition is planned for the summer of 2026. The exact date will be published by the City of Fürstenau in spring 2026. Traditionally, the castle festival takes place on a weekend in late spring or midsummer — a time when the medieval backdrop is particularly attractive and open-air programs work well.
The focus of the castle festival is medieval camp life: Authentically equipped reenactment groups set up their tents, cook over open fires, practice crafts, and are available for conversations. Craftsmen demonstrate blacksmithing, leatherworking, weaving, pottery, candle making, and coin minting.
Medieval music groups with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, drums, and flutes will perform at the castle festival. Sword fighting demonstrations, historical dances, and jester performances characterize the stage events. For families, there are storytellers, children's shows, and costume areas.
The culinary offerings follow medieval models: roast pork knuckle, stick bread, mead, dark beer, hearty stews, and pies — all in the form that was conceivable in the Middle Ages.
With its castle and historic old town, Fürstenau is one of the most traditional small towns in the northern Osnabrück region. The castle festival brings medieval history to life — a vibrant contribution to conveying the past and fostering the town's identity.
The exact program for 2026 will be published in spring. The structure will follow the proven key points from previous years:
