When the 19th Century Reinvents Itself

Steampunk — that aesthetic movement reimagining the Victorian era, with steam engines and gears, with brass and leather, with goggles and corsets — will once again find one of its most beautiful German stages in 2026: the LWL-Open Air Museum Hagen. On Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the historic workshops, forges, and mills of the Westphalian State Museum in Mäckingerbach will transform into a Steampunk world: "Von Schmiedefeuer und Zahnrädern" (Of Forge Fire and Gears).

The Perfect Backdrop

If there's a museum that seems tailor-made for Steampunk, it's the LWL-Open Air Museum Hagen. The museum, located in the Mäckingerbach valley, showcases Westphalia's industrial history in its authentic form: blacksmith shops, carpentry shops, sawmills, wire drawing mills, breweries, bakeries, print shops — the historic trades and workshops of the 18th and 19th centuries with functioning machinery, forge fires, and original tools.

Against this backdrop of real gears, real hammer blows, and real forge fire, Steampunk doesn't appear as a masquerade but as an organic extension — the fictional aesthetic meets historical substance, and both gain from it.

• New Design 2026 — the event has been graphically and conceptually revised

Since the 2000s, Steampunk has been considered one of Europe's most unusual subcultures — novels (Jules Verne, H.G. Wells), films (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), fashion, and lifestyle converge in an aesthetic that blends past and future. At the LWL-Open Air Museum, this becomes a family event: visitors attending on a regular Sunday (workshops 1 PM–5 PM, guided tour 2 PM included) meet Steampunk fans in Victorian attire.
