When polonaises, festive parades, and march music fill the city center of Emsdetten on the second Sunday in July, it's time for the Stadtschützenfest – a unique Münsterland event: 10 out of 16 member associations of the Vereinigte Schützengesellschaften Emsdetten celebrate simultaneously, each with its own program but within the same urban space. Dates 2026: July 10th to 12th, with a joint church service in St. Pankratius on Sunday morning, parades starting at 6 PM on Sunday and Monday, King's Balls, and anniversary celebrations in the clubhouses. Münsterland Unicum

The Stadtschützenfest Emsdetten is a unique concept in the Münsterland region: 10 out of 16 member associations of the Vereinigte Schützengesellschaften Emsdetten e.V. celebrate their shooting festival together and simultaneously. Each association has its own program, its own clubhouse, and its own event schedule – but all coordinate their movements throughout the city center over the entire weekend. The result is one of the largest decentralized shooting festivals in Westphalia.

Dates 2026 – July 10th to 12th

The date follows a fixed rule: 2nd Sunday in July. In 2026, this falls on July 12th, with the festival weekend kicking off on Friday, July 10th. The Vereinigte Schützengesellschaften officially communicate the date, as do the city of Emsdetten and local media (Allesdetten, Münsterland.com).

Program – The Three Festival Days

  • Friday, July 10th, 2026: Muster at the individual clubhouses, march to the shooting ranges, preparations for the shooting weekend.
  • Saturday, July 11th, 2026: Bird shooting, king's shot, and coronation in each association. King's Balls in the clubhouses in the evening.
  • Sunday, July 12th, 2026: 9:30 AM joint church service of all associations in St. Pankratius Church. Honors for the top shooters on Rathausplatz. From 6 PM large festive parades of the ten associations through the city center – the highlight of the weekend.
  • Monday, July 13th, 2026: Four associations continue their parade (from 6 PM). Some associations have a fourth festival day, the traditional "Hexenschützenfest".

King's Reception

One week later, on the 3rd Sunday in July, the formal King's Reception takes place – all newly crowned King and Queen couples from all associations are officially presented to the city leadership and dignitaries.

Emsdetten – Münsterland's Shooting Town

Emsdetten in the Steinfurt district (around 37,000 inhabitants) is one of the most traditional shooting towns in the Münsterland. The city has 16 organized shooting associations – an exceptionally high density for a town of this size. City and club life are deeply intertwined.
