Three days of festival in the Sorbian-German Spreewald town with a music association anniversary
The Stadtfest Vetschau/Spreewald is the largest folk festival (Volksfest) in the small Lower Lusatian town between Cottbus and Lübben. In 2026, it celebrates its 32nd edition – from September 4th to 6th, 2026, Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Straße transforms into a three-day festival mile with two main venues: Hellmannplatz (funfair) and Jahn-Sportplatz (stage and events).
Parallel to the festival mile, the traditional funfair with rides, carousels, shooting galleries, and candy stalls operates on Hellmannplatz. Hellmannplatz has been Vetschau's festival grounds for generations and is bustling around the clock throughout the weekend.
Co-organizer is the Musikverein Vetschau, which is celebrating a significant anniversary itself in 2026. The association presents performances by the brass band and youth ensembles, which have musically shaped the Stadtfest for decades.
Vetschau, with around 7,500 inhabitants in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, is located on the western edge of the Spreewald. The town is primarily known for the Wendish-German Double Church (built in 1845), where services were held simultaneously in two separate naves for the German and Sorbian communities – a unique architectural monument of Sorbian-German history. The Stadtfest reflects this cultural mix and provides space for the bilingual identity (German/Sorbian).
The 32nd Stadtfest Vetschau/Spreewald will be held from September 4th to 6th, 2026. The organizers are the City of Vetschau/Spreewald and the Musikverein Vetschau, which is celebrating its own anniversary in 2026.
The program is spread across two main venues: Hellmannplatz with the traditional funfair and the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportplatz with the main stage. The three days have clear thematic focuses: Friday with seniors' afternoon and evening party, Saturday as the main festival day with family and concert program, Sunday as a children's and family festival.
