Four-day festival „from clubs for clubs“ with the traditional duck race
Süßen is a Swabian small town in the district of Göppingen, located between Geislingen and Salach in the upper Filstal. With around 10,000 inhabitants, it is a typical southern German medium-sized town — characterized by an active club structure, a rich industrial tradition, and one of the oldest town festivals in the region. The Stadtfest Süßen will take place from July 9th to 12th, 2026 in the town center — four days, supported by the local clubs and coordinated by the specially founded Stadtfest Süßen e.V..
The self-chosen motto of the Stadtfest Süßen is „A Festival from Clubs for Clubs“ — and it is more than a slogan. Sports, music, fire brigade, shooting, and church clubs share the catering stands, coordinate the program, and secure the proceeds, which flow back into club activities. A pure Swabian club festival culture.
Probably the most popular program item is the duck race — a race of thousands of colorful plastic ducks on the Fils, the river that flows through the town. The ducks are numbered and „adopted“ beforehand, and the winning ducks receive prizes. The race celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024 and has since become one of the festival's most prominent program items. A true generational tradition for Süßen families.
A second traditional program item is the Hahnentanz — a traditional custom practiced in several Swabian small towns, where dancing takes place in the town center to traditional music. The combination of folk music, traditional costumes, and neighborly encounters gives the festival a special character — less urban-modern, more regionally rooted.
The organizer is Stadtfest Süßen e.V. with chairwoman Nina Beckmann. The city administration (contact person Katharina Weißenborn) also supports the organization. The website www.suessen.de offers a photo gallery of previous editions with club presentations and the painted plastic ducks from the cooperative art projects of previous years.
Its location in the upper Filstal makes Süßen a good starting point for exploring the central Swabian Jura — Geislingen with the Helfenstein, the Ravensburg castle ruins, and the hiking opportunities between Lonsee and Geislingen are immediately accessible. Those who come to the Stadtfest can combine the weekend well with Jura hikes or a tour into the Lonetal valley.
The Stadtfest Süßen 2026 runs from Thursday, July 9th, to Sunday, July 12th, 2026 in the town center. The organizer is Stadtfest Süßen e.V., which has been organizing the festival for years as a „festival from clubs for clubs“. The local sports, music, fire brigade, and church clubs share the catering stands and the program.
Highlights include the traditional duck race (plastic duck race on the Fils, which flows through the town) and the Hahnentanz — a traditional custom particularly cultivated in Süßen. Four days of live music, family program, and neighborly encounters. Free admission.
