Civic festival of the castle town at the foot of the basalt cone
Stolpen, a small town on the edge of Saxon Switzerland in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district, is famous for its castle perched on the 354-meter-high basalt cone. It is said that Augustus the Strong's famous mistress, Countess Cosel, was imprisoned here for over 49 years. The castle overlooks the old town, which, with its historic market square and Renaissance townhouses, is one of the jewels of Eastern Saxony.
Unlike historicizing castle festivals, the Stadtfest Stolpen deliberately focuses on an everyday, social, and open character. The town itself formulates it this way: "This town festival is not about past military events, but about craft traditions, shared food and drink, music, games, and diverse social and open encounters." This program makes the festival a civic celebration rather than a tourist attraction — even though day-trippers from Dresden are, of course, welcome.
The program points are spread across the historic market square, the main stage, and the alleys of the old town: Opening of the town festival by the Polenztaler Jagdhornbläser (hunting horn players), cheerful processions (Elferzüge) with communal singing, craft demonstrations ("Handel & Wandel" - Trade & Change), old German cuisine from Grandma's cookbook, stories and demonstrations about the "Alte Wasserkunst" (the town's historic water supply system), market stalls, live music, and children's activities.
The Stadtfest Stolpen is an instructive example of how a Saxon small town organizes its civic festival: not overloaded with tourism, but close to the everyday life of the town's population. Those who celebrate here will incidentally learn about the Renaissance architecture, the history of the Alte Wasserkunst, and the castle legend of Cosel — and ideally combine a visit to the festival with a hike around Stolpen Castle.
The 2026 edition continues the proven concept: a civic festival with a focus on craft traditions, culinary specialties, and a social and open program, rather than historical reenactment. The town of Stolpen will publish the detailed program a few weeks before the festival on stolpen.de.
The Polenztaler Jagdhornbläser traditionally open the town festival on Saturday morning with their music — an opening with character that underscores the rural roots of the castle town.
