Traditional Sauerland Schützenfest with bird shooting, parade, and coronation in Schmallenberg
Anyone who grew up in the Sauerland knows: the Schützenfest is not just an event, it is the event of the year. Business, school, family, club life – everything revolves around the Schützenfest weekend. Schmallenberg, one of the smaller towns in the Sauerland, located in the Hochsauerlandkreis district, cherishes this tradition with particular devotion.
The Schmallenberg Marksmen's Society organizes the main Schützenfest annually on the last weekend of June. The society owns its own Schützenhalle – a traditional festival hall in the town center – as well as huts (Oberstadthütte and Frenn-Wiethoff-Hütte), which support club life throughout the year. Local heritage, customs, shooting sports, and social gatherings are the four pillars.
The Schützenfest kicks off on Friday, June 26th, 2026, with the Junior Marksmen's Competition. Here, the young marksmen determine their junior king, who will be honored separately at the main festival. The actual Main Festival then runs from Saturday, June 27th, to Monday, June 29th, 2026:
The festival week marks the culmination of a year-round club life. Already on May 14th, 2026 (Ascension Day), the Children's Schützenfest takes place in Schmallenberg, and on May 31st, 2026, the Flag Consecration at 10:30 AM – both public events that herald the main Schützenfest.
Schmallenberg is one of the most geographically extensive municipalities in Germany (in square kilometers), with nearly 25,000 inhabitants spread across 83 villages. The town is situated in the Hochsauerland region on the Lenne river and belongs to the Schmallenberger Sauerland holiday region. Hiking trails, hay hotels, the Rothaarsteig trail, and alpine-like landscapes make Schmallenberg a holiday destination. The Schützenfest coincides with the summer holiday season – guests are explicitly welcome.
The highlight of every Schützenfest edition is the parade, where the marksmen's companies march through the town in uniform, accompanied by music bands and drum corps. This is followed by the coronation of the new marksmen's king (if the bird shooting yields a result), which is performed with great ceremony in the festival hall.
Schmallenberg is accessible by car via the A46 (exit Bestwig) and the B511. By train, it's only indirect via Bestwig or Meschede, then by bus. Those who want to experience the full Schützenfest should stay in one of the numerous Sauerland hotels or guesthouses – often booked up early on festival weekends.
