Porta Westfalica — City of 15 Districts
The city of Porta Westfalica, with around 36,000 inhabitants in the Minden-Lübbecke district, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a geographically extensive medium-sized town at the transition from the Weser Uplands to the Minden Land. Characteristic is the Porta Westfalica mountain pass, through which the Weser river breaks through the low mountain range between the Wesergebirge and Wiehengebirge — one of Westphalia's most famous geo-symbols, crowned by the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. The city itself consists of 15 different districts, of which Hausberge forms the town centre.
Stadtfest Since 1979
The Stadtfest Porta Westfalica has been held annually since 1979 — 47 editions in 2026. The organiser is the Stadtkulturring Porta Westfalica, an umbrella organisation uniting the city's clubs and initiatives. The festival has a distinctly family character: clubs, schools, carnival societies, and initiatives from all 15 districts participate, with their own stalls, programme items, and stage moments. This distinguishes the Stadtfest in Porta from the typical commercial city festival format of many other towns.
Date and Programme 2026
The festival runs from Friday, September 11th, to Sunday, September 13th, 2026 — the second full September weekend, traditionally immediately after the end of the summer holidays. The weekend programme:
- Friday, September 11th — ceremonial opening by the mayor, live music in the evening on the main stage
- Saturday, September 12th — flea market from early morning, three stages with different programmes, family activities, stalls and food trucks
- Sunday, September 13th — continuation of the flea market, three stages, concluding programme in the late afternoon
Three Stages, One Mosaic
Instead of a single large main stage, the Stadtfest works with three smaller stages, each offering its own programme — Pop/Rock on one, traditional folk music on the second, youth and school performances on the third. The 2026 lineup will be published by the Stadtkulturring over the summer and usually includes regional cover bands, solo acts from the surrounding area, and explicitly performances from the districts.
Weekend Flea Market
One of the hallmarks is the flea market, which accompanies the festival on Saturday and Sunday. Private traders — no commercial vendors — sell used goods, antiques, small collector's items, and handmade wares. Stall registration via the organiser's website. Opening hours: usually Saturday 8 am to 6 pm, Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.
Financial Challenge 2026
An open statement from the organiser: "We closed the year 2025 with a deficit of more than €8,000" and without further support, reserves would be depleted by 2027. The Stadtfest receives no public funding and is financed exclusively by stall fees and sponsors. The Stadtkulturring is actively collecting donations through a campaign — those who want to preserve the festival can contribute.
