325 years of civic shooting tradition and new city festival between the Town Hall and the Cathedral
The Mindener Freischießen is one of the oldest and most magnificent civic shooting festivals in Germany. First documented in 1682, it is organized by the Mindener Bürgerbataillon — a historically evolved civic guard tradition with companies from the various city districts. In 2026, the festival runs from August 6th to 9th, on the traditional second weekend in August, and is merging for the first time with the new Innenstadtfete.
The kick-off is the „Grünholen" (gathering greenery): Members of the Bürgerbataillon decorate the city center with birch branches and flowers — a visible sign that the shooting festival is beginning.
The main festival day starts early at 6 a.m. with drum and fife signals. The companies gather in their districts and march in a formal parade through the city center — in traditional black tailcoats and top hats, a unique visual spectacle. This is followed by the competition for the title of Shooting King; in the evening, the new king is proclaimed and crowned at the Cathedral and parades through the city in a royal carriage. The festivities conclude with celebrations in the city center's venues.
The companies march back to their respective districts („Wachtage") and celebrate locally. In parallel, the new Innenstadtfete starts on the Market Square and Cathedral Square — live music, food trucks, bars, and family activities bring the Minden city center to life with a modern city festival flair.
The solemn conclusion is the Großer Zapfenstreich (Grand Tattoo) with torches and military music — an impressive evening ritual that bathes Minden in a special atmosphere. The Innenstadtfete continues during the day.
The Mindener Bürgerbataillon is not a military unit but a civic tradition. Several companies from the various districts of Minden (city center, right Weser bank, Westphalia) are united within it. With their historical uniforms — black tailcoat, white trousers, top hat — they are the visual hallmark of the festival.
The district town of Minden is the seat of the Minden-Lübbecke district (North Rhine-Westphalia) and lies on the Weser river at the border between the Weser Uplands and the North German Plain. With the famous Waterways Cross (Mittelland Canal crosses the Weser) and a historic city center around the Town Hall and Cathedral, it offers the perfect setting for a traditional civic shooting festival.
The 2026 Freischießen falls on the 2nd weekend of August — the traditional date. Thursday features the Grünholen, Friday the main festival day with drum and fife signals, tailcoat parade, and Shooting King crowning. Saturday sees the companies' guard days in the districts, while the new Innenstadtfete starts on the Market Square and Cathedral Square. Sunday concludes with the solemn Großer Zapfenstreich.
