Inclusion festival in the run-up to the Special Olympics National Games Saarland 2026
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the city of Homburg in the Saarpfalz district will set a visible example: The Stadtfest der Inklusion (Inclusion City Festival) is the kick-off event for the Special Olympics National Games Saarland 2026, which will take place from June 15 to 20, 2026, with around 13,000 accredited participants and up to 100,000 visitors throughout Saarland. Homburg is one of the selected Host Towns for the games — and is celebrating this commitment with a large city festival that puts lived inclusion center stage.
The city festival pursues a clear goal: enabling encounters. Clubs, initiatives, schools, social organizations, residential facilities, workshops, and educational institutions from all over Saarpfalz will present themselves at information stands — from inclusive sports clubs to studios for artists with disabilities to cafés with inclusive staff. The message: Inclusion is not abstract, but present everywhere.
A varied stage program will take place on the central stage in the city center: inclusive bands and choirs, dance groups with and without disabilities, performances by Special Olympics athletes, speeches, show acts. An inclusive hands-on program invites visitors to try things out on the activity area — from Boccia to Goalball to inclusive dance workshops.
Participating clubs and welfare organizations will provide the catering — from bratwurst and Schwenker (grilled meat) to cake stands run by social organizations to inclusively managed cafés. The proceeds will go to the inclusion work of the organizations.
The Special Olympics National Games 2026 are Germany's largest inclusion sports event. From June 15 to 20, 2026, athletes will compete in over 20 sports — swimming, athletics, tennis, football, horseback riding, powerlifting, and many more. Homburg, Saarbrücken, Saarlouis, and other Saarland cities will host the venues. The city festival on June 13 opens the festive days — a premiere that sets standards in Saarpfalz.
The traditional Familien- und Kinderfest Homburg (Family and Children's Festival Homburg) (usually on June 21) will be suspended in 2026 to make space for the Stadtfest der Inklusion. It will return in its usual form in 2027.
The premiere edition in 2026 falls on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The organizer is the city of Homburg via the Office for Education and Sport (Michael Kuhlgatz, Tel. 06841/101-229, [email protected]).
Clubs, initiatives, and organizations can still participate in the citizen team. Forms for hands-on activities, catering, and stage contributions are available from the city of Homburg.
The complete program will be published in May 2026 on homburg.de.
