Christmas market with ice rink on Christian-Weber-Platz in the Saarpfalz district
While other Saarland Christmas markets welcome their guests with mulled wine, gingerbread, and stalls, the Homburg Christmas Village goes one step further: a large ice arena right in the middle of Christian-Weber-Platz. Every day, the public circles around on the ice, and in the evening, the rink transforms into a curling facility for ice stock sport tournaments – a combination that is unique in this form in the Saarland.
Around the ice arena, lovingly decorated wooden huts are lined up, where local and traveling vendors offer Christmas items, gifts, winter fashion, mulled wine, gingerbread, crêpes, and Saarland specialties. The centerpiece of the culinary scene is Die Alm – an authentic alpine hut in the style of a Bavarian ski resort, where groups can warm up in a convivial atmosphere, drink mulled wine (Jagatee), and enjoy cheese fondue.
The stage program is one of the most extensive Christmas market programs in the Saarland: daily concerts, live music from cover bands and Schlager groups, a Santa Claus on Ice show, a Festival of Lights, and a spectacular Ice Skating Revue with professional figure skaters during the pre-Christmas period. The entertainment is aimed at families as well as school classes and seniors.
The Christmas Village opens until 9 PM from Sunday to Wednesday, and until 10 PM from Thursday to Saturday – a customer-friendly arrangement that attracts the after-work crowd from Saarbrücken, Pirmasens, and Zweibrücken to Homburg. Open only briefly on Christmas Eve (10 AM–2 PM), closed on December 25 and 26. Open again continuously from December 27–30.
Homburg is a university city – the University Hospital of Saarland shapes the cityscape as much as the historic city center with its Renaissance houses. The Christmas Village fits charmingly into this mix: large enough to impress, small enough not to become a mass market. A worthwhile excursion from Saarbrücken, Mainz, or Mannheim.
