Top-10 Christmas market in German-speaking countries — historic city center, 150 festive stalls, medieval market in the "Mott" area
The St. Wendel Christmas and Medieval Market has been considered one of the ten most beautiful Christmas markets in German-speaking countries for years — an award confirmed by various rankings (deutsche-weihnachtsmaerkte.de, Weihnachtsmarkt-Magazin). The reason lies in its unique combination: the historic city center of the former university town of St. Wendel with its baroque Wendelinus Basilica, the Fruchtmarkt, the pedestrian zone, and the "Mott" area — and the unusual concept of combining a classic Christmas market with its own medieval market.
The actual Christmas market extends throughout the city center: around the Town Hall and the Wendelinus Basilica, through the pedestrian zone, and across the Fruchtmarkt. Around 150 festively decorated stalls offer Advent candles, gingerbread, mulled wine, Christmas tree decorations, regional specialties (Saarländer Lyoner, Bliesgau cheese, Bostalsee honey), wood carvings from the Erzgebirge, stollen, and nativity figures. In the medieval market area "Mott", the world changes: wooden stalls instead of steel-frame huts, blacksmiths at the forge, woodturners at the foot-powered lathe, felt artists, bow makers, minstrels with hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes, plus medieval music concerts, jugglers, and craft demonstrations.
Several program points are permanent features:
The market runs from December 4th to 13th, 2026 — ten days, significantly longer than most Saarland Advent markets. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11 AM–8 PM, Friday to Sunday 11 AM–9 PM. This extended opening makes the market accessible during the week and leads to significantly less crowded visitor flows compared to weekend-only markets.
St. Wendel is the district town of the St. Wendel district in northern Saarland and the center of the pilgrimage tradition surrounding Saint Wendelin. The St. Wendelin Basilica from the 14th/15th century is one of the most important Gothic sacred buildings in Saarland. Anyone visiting the market should definitely see the basilica from the inside — the architecture and the Advent lighting create an impressive picture. The St. Wendel region with Bostalsee lake, Schaumberg mountain, and Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park is right on its doorstep.
When the Wendelinus Basilica stands in the snow, the bells ring for vespers, and the night watchman walks through the alleys with his lantern, you understand why St. Wendel lands in the top ten rankings. It's not a mass spectacle like Cologne or Nuremberg, but a market with concept and atmosphere — just large enough for a dense program, but small enough to preserve its character.
The 2026 dates are officially confirmed on sant-wendel.de and tourismus.sankt-wendel.de. The city of St. Wendel will announce the detailed market program with all special days, artist performances, and concerts in autumn 2026.
Detailed program with all performances, concerts, and special events will be published by the city of St. Wendel in autumn 2026.
