Traditional Palatinate Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the over 1,000-year-old municipality of Otterstadt, with the characteristic nickname "Stickelspitzer"
The Otterstadt Kerwe, also known by its traditional dialect nickname "Stickelspitzer-Kerwe", is the traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the municipality of Otterstadt. With its over 1,000-year history, Otterstadt is one of the oldest settlements in the Vorderpfalz region and has a particularly strong identity, which is also expressed in the jocular self-designation "Stickelspitzer".
The nickname "Stickelspitzer" comes from the Palatinate dialect and refers to the traditional nickname of the Otterstadt inhabitants. A "Stickel" in the Palatinate dialect is a stake, pole, or pointed wooden slat. "Stickelspitzer" can be freely translated as "stake pointer" or "stake sharpener" – a reference to old professions or typical activities in the municipality, perhaps sharpening vineyard stakes or fence posts. Such "nicknames" for neighboring municipalities are typical in the Palatinate and express a humorous self-irony with tradition.
Like all Palatinate Kerwen, the Stickelspitzer-Kerwe upholds the classic rituals:
The Karneval Club Otterstadt e.V. (KCO) plays an important role in the organization, not only upholding the carnival tradition but also being active at Kerwen and other events. Dates and current information are communicated via the club's website.
The domain "1000jahre.otterstadt.de" refers to the thousandth anniversary of the municipality, which was celebrated in 2021. Otterstadt was first mentioned in a document in 1014, thus looking back on a particularly long history. The Stickelspitzer-Kerwe is part of this long cultural heritage.
Otterstadt belongs to the Rheinauen association of municipalities, along with Altrip, Neuhofen, and Waldsee. With around 3,600 inhabitants, it is one of the smaller municipalities in the association, which contributes to the familiar character of the Kerwe.
The 2026 edition continues the centuries-old Otterstadt Kerwe tradition. In this manageable municipality of around 3,600 inhabitants, a classic Palatinate festival atmosphere is created for several days, combining the long history of the place with vibrant Kerwe culture. The local clubs and the Karneval Club Otterstadt jointly design the program.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
