The largest of Hallstadt's four Kirchweihen in August
Hallstadt – located immediately north of Bamberg, and with a population of around 8,000, one of the largest towns in the Bamberg district – celebrates four Kirchweihen annually, each associated with a parish or a district. The largest and most regionally renowned is the St. Kilian Kirchweih, which celebrates the patronage of Hallstadt's main parish church, St. Kilian. St. Kilian – an Irish missionary of the 7th century – is also the patron saint of the Diocese of Würzburg and one of the most important Franconian saints.
For four days, the festival grounds in Hallstadt transform into a classic Franconian Kirchweih area: a festival tent with a stage program featuring brass bands, cover bands, and morning pint sessions, alongside amusement rides (bumper cars, Ferris wheel, chain carousel), children's carousels, and showman stalls. Local clubs – fire department, marksmen, sports clubs – operate their own stands with Franconian cuisine, beer from Bamberg breweries, and homemade cakes.
The highlight is the Kirchweih procession on Sunday: a festive parade with traditional costume groups, floats, brass bands, clubs, and the Kirchweih youth marches through Hallstadt's town center from the market square to the festival grounds. The parade is part of the Bamberg District Kirchweih tradition and uses traditional costumes, insignia, and floats passed down through generations.
Throughout the year, three other Kirchweihen are celebrated, each honoring its own parishes and districts: the Johannes Kirchweih at the end of June (June 27-28, 2026), the Anna Kirchweih at the end of July (July 24-27, 2026), and the Kirchweih Dörfleins at the beginning of August (August 6-10, 2026) – the latter in the Dörfleins district. This quadruple Kirchweih tradition makes Hallstadt one of the most densely celebrated Kirchweih communities in the Bamberg district.
Hallstadt is located immediately north of Bamberg on the A70 motorway and is functionally closely linked to the World Heritage city. With large shopping centers (ERTL-Zentrum), industrial areas, and a growing residential population, Hallstadt is a modern Franconian town – yet the tradition of the four Kirchweihen remains unbroken, firmly anchoring the town in Upper Franconian festival culture.
The 2026 edition runs from Friday, August 14 to Monday, August 17, 2026. The Kirchweih opens on Friday evening with the beer tapping ceremony, Saturday and Sunday are the main festival days, and Monday is the wind-down with a family day.
Sunday is the day of the grand Kirchweih procession: costume groups from Hallstadt and surrounding parishes, brass bands, and floats march through the town center from the market square to the festival grounds. The prelude is a festive church service in the parish church of St. Kilian.
