A Very British Christmas in Berlin-Westend – Mince Pies, Christmas Carols with organ and bagpipes in the Anglican church
The Anglican St. George's Episcopal Church on Preußenallee in Berlin-Westend is one of the oldest English-speaking congregations in Germany. Once a year, on a Saturday in Advent, it opens its doors for the traditional English Christmas Market. It's a decidedly small, charming market – no Ferris wheel, no bratwurst stand, but Mince Pies, English tea, British books, and Christmas Carols.
British and German exhibitors offer: English books and DVDs (a main draw for many), English children's books and toys, traditional Christmas Pudding and Mince Pies, jams, tea, gingerbread, jewellery, crafts, decorations. The church also has a food corner with British cakes, sandwiches, and sherry punch.
Inside the church, bagpipers from Berlin Pipe Bands perform. The congregation invites you to join in communal Christmas Carol singing with organ accompaniment – a format that attracts many English-speaking Berliners: diplomatic families, British expats, German English students, and lovers of British Christmas culture. A tombola with British prizes runs throughout the day.
Westend is part of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district and lies between Kaiserdamm, Olympiapark, and Grunewald. Preußenallee is one of the elegant residential streets, with villas from the 1920s and 30s. St. George's belongs to the small network of English-speaking communities in Berlin and is a meeting point for expats even outside of the market.
The English Christmas Market at St. George's Anglican Episcopal Church has been a fixture on Berlin's Advent calendar for years. The event is planned again for 2026; the exact date (traditionally an Advent Saturday afternoon) will be announced by the organiser in autumn.
The format remains unchanged: British and German exhibitors with English books, DVDs, toys, food items, and crafts; a tombola; bagpipes inside the church; communal Christmas Carol singing with organ accompaniment; catering with British classics.
The exact date and detailed programme will be published in autumn 2026 on stgeorges.de and on the Berlin Christmas Markets website.
