Biennial town festival in Harsewinkel — arts and crafts market, club mile, technology mile on Alter Markt and Münsterstraße
The Spökenkieker-Stadtfest is Harsewinkel's largest recurring town festival — and with its two-year rhythm, one of the Volksfeste (popular festivals) in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is prepared with considerable effort each time. The next edition is planned for Sunday, September 20, 2026 — a Sunday with open shops from 1 PM to 6 PM with an extensive supporting program.
The festival is spread across two central axes of the Harsewinkel town center:
The arts and crafts market features local and regional artisans — potters, felt and wool workers, jewelers, leatherworkers, woodcarvers, and similar. Locations for a wedding gift, a special piece of jewelry, or a Westphalian souvenir.
The club mile showcases the full spectrum of Harsewinkel's club life: sports, social, cultural, and traditional clubs present their activities, seek new members, and offer hands-on activities. For new residents of the town, this mile is an ideal way to connect with the local community.
The technology mile on Münsterstraße is a special feature that reflects the town's industrial identity: Harsewinkel is the headquarters of the agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas — one of Europe's largest combine harvester producers. Modern agricultural and harvesting machinery is exhibited on the technology mile, often with opportunities to view it or ask technicians questions.
The Spökenkieker is the Westphalian folk term for a person with a "second sight" — who can see ghosts or sense the future. In Harsewinkel, the figure is firmly rooted in local legend; a Spökenkieker monument and a Spökenkieker hiking trail in the surrounding area keep the tradition alive. The town festival borrows this folkloric name — as a commitment to local history.
The festival day (September 20, 2026) is a Sunday with open shops, with town center stores open from 1 PM to 6 PM. This makes the town festival attractive even for casual visitors without specific festival interests — shopping and festival atmosphere can be combined.
In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, district of Gütersloh, the Spökenkieker-Stadtfest is one of the prominent town festivals in the region — alongside the Stadtwerke-Sommer in Gütersloh and the Versmold town festival. Those using the Münsterland cycle route can combine the festival day with a stage of the Spökenkieker Route.
The 2026 edition of the Spökenkieker-Stadtfest follows the proven concept: three spatial focuses (arts and crafts, clubs, technology), combined with the Sunday with open shops. Detailed program to be published by the city of Harsewinkel in summer 2026.

Those interested in Claas machinery or the Spökenkieker tradition should visit the technology mile and the Spökenkieker hiking trail before or after the festival day. A Sunday visit from 1 PM to 6 PM is optimal — open shops and festival atmosphere can be well combined.
