About Spökenkieker-Stadtfest

The Spökenkieker-Stadtfest is the major biennial civic festival of the town of Harsewinkel in the Gütersloh district. It takes place every two years and combines an arts and crafts market, a club mile, and a technology mile into a multifaceted weekend. The next edition is planned for September 20, 2026, with shops open on Sunday from 1 PM to 6 PM. The venues are the Alter Markt (arts and crafts) and Münsterstraße (technology/machinery). The festival combines Harsewinkel's folk tradition of the Spökenkieker (a legendary seer who can see afar) with the town's industrial heritage — home of Claas.

Biennial Civic Festival with Two Venues

The Spökenkieker-Stadtfest is Harsewinkel's largest recurring town festival — and with its two-year rhythm, one of the Volksfeste (popular festivals) in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is prepared with considerable effort each time. The next edition is planned for Sunday, September 20, 2026 — a Sunday with open shops from 1 PM to 6 PM with an extensive supporting program.

The Two Venues

The festival is spread across two central axes of the Harsewinkel town center:

  • Alter Markt — historic market square with arts and crafts market and club mile
  • Münsterstraße — central shopping street with the technology mile

Arts and Crafts Market at Alter Markt

The arts and crafts market features local and regional artisans — potters, felt and wool workers, jewelers, leatherworkers, woodcarvers, and similar. Locations for a wedding gift, a special piece of jewelry, or a Westphalian souvenir.

Club Mile

The club mile showcases the full spectrum of Harsewinkel's club life: sports, social, cultural, and traditional clubs present their activities, seek new members, and offer hands-on activities. For new residents of the town, this mile is an ideal way to connect with the local community.

Technology Mile — Machinery from Harsewinkel

The technology mile on Münsterstraße is a special feature that reflects the town's industrial identity: Harsewinkel is the headquarters of the agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas — one of Europe's largest combine harvester producers. Modern agricultural and harvesting machinery is exhibited on the technology mile, often with opportunities to view it or ask technicians questions.

Who is the "Spökenkieker"?

The Spökenkieker is the Westphalian folk term for a person with a "second sight" — who can see ghosts or sense the future. In Harsewinkel, the figure is firmly rooted in local legend; a Spökenkieker monument and a Spökenkieker hiking trail in the surrounding area keep the tradition alive. The town festival borrows this folkloric name — as a commitment to local history.

Sunday with Open Shops

The festival day (September 20, 2026) is a Sunday with open shops, with town center stores open from 1 PM to 6 PM. This makes the town festival attractive even for casual visitors without specific festival interests — shopping and festival atmosphere can be combined.

State of North Rhine-Westphalia — District of Gütersloh

In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, district of Gütersloh, the Spökenkieker-Stadtfest is one of the prominent town festivals in the region — alongside the Stadtwerke-Sommer in Gütersloh and the Versmold town festival. Those using the Münsterland cycle route can combine the festival day with a stage of the Spökenkieker Route.
