Medieval festival with jousting tournament in the baroque castle grounds
In the southern district of Wickrath in the large Lower Rhine city of Mönchengladbach lies the baroque Schloss Wickrath — a spectacular moated castle from the 18th century with extensive park grounds. From August 11th to 13th, 2026, the castle grounds will transform into a medieval market town: the annual Ritterfest. A new venue that, after the series moved, offers significantly more space and atmospheric quality than previous locations.
The Ritterfest offers a wide range of medieval activities:
The venue is Schloss Wickrath, an 18th-century baroque moated castle with extensive park grounds. The water features, the symmetrical axis, the old trees, and the main building form a particularly atmospheric backdrop for a medieval festival. Today, the castle houses the District Government Forestry Service Center and a horse stud — the park grounds are publicly accessible and a popular local recreation area for Mönchengladbach residents.
The organizer is CS History & Event GmbH from Düsseldorf, managed by Knut Schulz. The company specializes in large medieval and historical events and also organizes other Ritterfeste in North Rhine-Westphalia. The cooperation partner is Marketing Gesellschaft Mönchengladbach mbH, which coordinates marketing for the castle and city events.
The independent city of Mönchengladbach, with its approximately 263,000 inhabitants, is located on the Lower Rhine in western North Rhine-Westphalia. Known as the city of Mönchengladbach football (Borussia Mönchengladbach in Borussia-Park), as a fashion and textile center, and for the Museum Abteiberg (Hans Hollein Building). The district of Wickrath is located in the south of the city, with its own atmosphere centered around the castle as a historical landmark.
The 2026 Ritterfest runs for three days at Schloss Wickrath in southern Mönchengladbach. The spectacular park grounds of the baroque moated castle serve as the backdrop for a jousting tournament, craft demonstrations, and a medieval market. After the event moved in recent years, Schloss Wickrath offers significantly more space and atmospheric quality than previous locations.
