Traditional folk and heritage festival of the St. Josef Schützenbruderschaft – one week after Pentecost in Mönchengladbach-Geistenbeck
The St. Josef Schützenbruderschaft Geistenbeck is one of the traditional Catholic brotherhoods on the Lower Rhine. It preserves customs under the motto “Faith – Custom – Homeland” – one of the guiding principles of historical German Schützenbruderschaften. The annual Schützenfest is one of the most important social and religious highlights in the Mönchengladbach district of Geistenbeck.
The Schützenfest traditionally takes place one week after Pentecost. As Pentecost 2026 falls on May 24th/25th, the probable festival dates are June 13th to 16th, 2026 (Friday to Monday). The festival grounds are the Stapper Weg car park in the centre of Geistenbeck, in the south of Mönchengladbach.
A Catholic Schützenfest on the Lower Rhine follows a fixed liturgical and festive rhythm:
The festival is accompanied by DJ sets, live bands like CAEBO (Rhineland cover band) and several pipe and drum corps. The festival Sunday with the grand parade regularly draws several thousand spectators to the district.
The brotherhood not only organises the Schützenfest but also honours long-standing members annually – Silver (25 years), Gold (40 years), and Diamond anniversaries (50 years and more) are part of the festival Sunday. At the last event, Hans Peter Otten was honoured for 50 years of active membership. These awards underscore the brotherhood's deep roots in the neighbourhood.
Geistenbeck is located in the south of Mönchengladbach (South district), in the Düsseldorf administrative region on the Lower Rhine. The district, with around 5,500 inhabitants, has retained a village-like structure and is accessible via the Mönchengladbach–Aachen railway line and various bus routes. The Schützenfest is one of Geistenbeck's most important community-building events – the occasion when the district celebrates its identity.
Anyone visiting the Schützenfest at Stapper Weg experiences Rhineland traditions in their genuine, unadulterated form. Unlike commercial festivals, the event thrives on the commitment of its members, the defilé of guest brotherhoods (often in historical uniforms), and the interplay of piety, conviviality, and local pride. Free admission – food and dance tickets are purchased on site.
The 2026 Schützenfest follows the annual tradition – one week after Pentecost, Geistenbeck transforms into the centre of Lower Rhine marksmen's customs. The service on Sunday, the festival parade with guest brotherhoods from Giesenkirchen, Wickrath, Mülfort, and Hockstein, and the traditional Vogelschuss on Monday form the highlights of the four festival days.
Exact times will be announced in spring 2026 on the brotherhood's website.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Dance evenings in the marquee require an entrance or consumption ticket. Food and drinks (beer, etc.) are extra.
