Historic XXL Wooden Garden Games in the Baroque Palace Park
The baroque Oranienburg Palace Park is one of Brandenburg's oldest palace gardens — it was laid out in the 17th century for Electorate Louise Henriette and designed according to plans by Johann Arnold Nering. Today, it is a publicly accessible landscape park in the heart of Oranienburg, hosting various cultural events. One of these is the annual Spielefest, which revives the former courtly tradition of large-scale garden and skill games for all generations.
On Thursday, May 14, 2026 (Ascension Day), the palace park opens its lawns for a family festival with historic XXL wooden garden games. The oversized wooden toys — skittle alleys, Jenga towers, hammer forging, ring toss, puzzle games — will be set up throughout the park. Parents, grandparents, and children play together, compare skills, and discover forms of play long gone from modern living rooms.
The festival falls right in the middle of the most beautiful spring season in the palace park: Linden trees are budding, tulips and daffodils are blooming, and the freshly cut grass invites you to lay out a picnic blanket. You can combine the Spielefest with an extended park visit and a walk around Oranienburg Palace — the second oldest baroque complex in Brandenburg after Sanssouci.
The program includes:
The Spielefest is included in the regular palace park entrance fee — no additional charge. The park is accessible for a fee (combined ticket with the palace recommended).
On Ascension Day, Tourismus und Kultur Oranienburg transforms the baroque palace park into an open play area with large-scale historic wooden games. Skittle alleys, Jenga towers, ring toss, hammer forging, puzzle games, and other skill games will be set up on the expansive park lawns. Families can drop by, play without prior registration, and have the rules explained by trained supervisors. Cafés and restaurants in the park complement the offerings; bringing your own picnic blankets is welcome.
Oranienburg is located north of Berlin and is reachable by S-Bahn line S1 in 50 minutes from Berlin Hauptbahnhof. It's a 10-minute walk from the station to the palace park. By car, take the A111/B96.
Spielefest included in the palace park entrance fee. Day tickets for the palace park and combined tickets with the palace are available.
